Dark Lights

"The light of the body is the eye: if therefore your eye be single, your whole body shall be full of light. But if your eye be evil, your whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you be darkness, how great is that darkness!" (Matthew 6:22-23).

According to the Instruction Book, a human being is made up of three parts. The body is the machine in which we live. The soul is the self-conscious part of us—our will, the emotions—the real you. And the human spirit is our God-conscious part.

However, the Scriptures teach us that the spirit is dead. It's like an unplugged lamp. When we are born again, the spirit suddenly comes alive and the "eyes of our understanding" are opened. The light comes on. That's why there's such a dichotomy with Christianity.

Before I was a Christian I had no consciousness of God. But for the last 41 years—since I was born of the Spirit (see John 3:1-5) I have been constantly "conscious" of His presence. I am no long unconscious. Or to put it another way, I was like a blind man standing in front of a painting. Now I can not only see the painting, but I have met the Painter.
