Two parallel congresses were held by the Peoples Democratic Party in Ibadan on Saturday with Seyi Makinde and Rashidi Ladoja leading each of the factions that held the two congresses.

The congresses, which were held to elect the state executives of the party, exposed the crack in the party despite the reconciliation of the Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee. Our correspondent learned that the party split after disagreement between the two factions over sharing of positions in the executive during a meeting held late on Friday night.

At the Makinde-led congress, held in the Oke Ado area of Ibadan, three key officers were elected, with Jacob Adetoro emerging as chairman while Segun Ogunlade was elected vice-chairman. Wasiu Adeleke also emerged as the faction’s secretary.

Sen Hosea Agboola; wife of the late Ibadan politician, Bose Adedibu; a former Deputy Governor in the state, Hazeem Gbolarumi; a former House of Representatives Majority Leader, Mulikat Akande-Adeola; Bisi Olopoeniyan and Taiwo Oluyemi were present at the congress.

While the two congresses were on, the monitoring team from the national headquarters of the party, led by the congress committee chairman, Liyel Imoke, met both factions at a neutral venue for several hours to discuss the rift but it ended in a deadlock, with the two factions failing to agree on one congress.
