If he was banned as a result of the TV license thing then that is wrong. My major problem with the mod here is the penchant to banned dissenting voices even if they have not committed an offense. I'm familiar with the academic route but one alternative will be Tech Nation Visa (exceptional Talent and exceptional Promise). If you have had some tech exposure and tech startup with some certifications here and there (online certifications) and maybe some patents (in application and not necessarily approved) you can give it a try. There is also the peer review path for different professions where you are accessed by your closest regulator - Arts Council, Royal Academy of Engineering etc.

I followed the UKRI endorsed funders route since I'm an investigator on an eligible H2020 funded project.

Yes, surprisingly not many know about the Tier 1 route and how you can get ILR in 3 years. If you can, get the ILR as soon as possible as the cost keeps increasing.

To my knowledge there is no such thing as an international certificate of good character as that presupposes a central international body authorised to issue such documents to anyone anywhere in the world.

A certificate of good character is simply the criminal record check you get from the police in Ikoyi.
A DBS is the UK equivalent of the police certificate you get from Nigeria.

It's done at the Records office in Ikoyi, near the Passport Office.
You don't have to go to Lagos to get it done, go to the police HQ in your state and they should be able to give you contact details or ask around.

You drop them in the red priority boxes on the streets. All the instructions you need are included in the testing package.
