Bakassi Peninsula

The leader of the Inspection Committee on Bakassi, Mrs. Moremi Soyinka-Onijala has said that no fewer than 200, 000 Nigerians who are still residing in the Bakassi Peninsula , have now been chased out by the Cameroonian Gendarmes.

She stated this on Friday in Akure while briefing the Ondo State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Ali Olanusi, on the activities of her committee which was set up in January this year by the Ag President, Goodluck Jonathan.

The oil-rich Peninsula was ceeded to Cameroon from Nigeria as a result of a World Court Judgment in 2006.

A Green Tree Agreement signed between Nigeria and Cameroon in 2008, and witnessed by the United Nations, United States, France, Germany, United Kingdom and the Ireland allows Nigerians who are residing in the Peninsula to stay till 2013 before they would be subjected to Cameroonian civil laws.

However, the alleged harassment of the Cameroonian gendarmes had forced many Nigerians in the area to flee to Nigeria and settled in camps as refugees.

She said her committee was therefore, saddled with the responsibility of investigating allegations of harrassment against Nigerians in the Bakassi by the gendarmes, see whether they had breached the Green Tree Agreement and make appropriate recommendations to the Federal Government.

Soyinka-Onijala explained that most residents of the areas who are indigenes of Akwa-Ibom, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross-River, Delta, Abia, Imo and Ondo States, are now scattered in four camps in Cross River State.

While the Niger Deltans (excluding the Akwa Ibom and Calabar people) were fighting with Nigeria against Biafra, the Nigeria side that they ere fighting for was busy ceding their own land, their heritage, their birthright, their generational inheritance to Cameroun . . .without their consent.
Gowon needed to use Cameroun to enter Biafra. He went promising Cameroun that after the war he would give them the oil rich bakassi peninsula. He should have ceded the Adamawa part of Nigeria which belongs to the North and shares borders with Cameroun.
What a shame!

If Nigeria wants this land back? They'll fight for it. Israel is still going against UN's order on building settlements in eastern Jerusalem. How can you chase people out of their native land because of some backyard deal from government?

It falls under the same injustice in Nigeria. Like Ellyptical asked: Why didn't Gowon cede Adamawa state to Cameroun?. As a matter of fact, Adamawa was Cameroun and many of them are Camerounians.

Making deals with the devil. This is what Gowon and Co. did in order to defeat Biafra. So much of a fuss to defeat us. Had to use Cameroon and the Western powers arms to defeat us.

All we needed to keep this land was to demand that the will of the people of Bakassi be respected. Do they want to be Nigerians or Camerounians?
We will simply provide the Bakassi people the needed security to make that choice.

We refused and allowed some foolish old men at the Hague to decide the ownership of a land they could hardly point on the map before the issue was brought to them.

And annoyingly Prince Bola Ajibola calls this his life-time achievement. Signing away some parts of Nigeria to a foreign Country in return for nothing.
Who says Cameroun will want to go on open was with Nigeria in this day and age?

But we said to our people. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN.

Immagine UK defending Falklands thousands of miles away and we can't defend an Island in our own waters.

At this point, they may want to be Camerounians. Sorry to bust your bubble but it's absurd that someone will chase you out of your fatherland because of some foolish decision in the Hague.

To be honest.

I think we should wage war against Cameroun in this Bakassi issue.

At least our soldiers will be busy and focused on their Profession. Instead of harassing Nigerians all over the place.

I can imagine how fulfilled these soldiers are, serving 35 years in a profession, without practicing the profession.
