Yar’Adua: Yakassai cautions Bankole From DESMOND MGBOH, Kano Thursday, March 25, 2010 Elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai has cautioned the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Dimeji Bankole to do all in his power to check the moves of the pro- Jonathan group, pointing out that his own position as the Speaker of House automatically comes under threat, the day any harm comes to the Yar’Adua Presidency. Speaking to Daily Sun in his residence in Kano, on Tuesday, Yakasai insisted that the recent dissolution of the Federal Executive Council was part of a grand design to remove President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua from office. The Second Republic adviser to the president, who is one of the few voices on the side of the ailing president remarked that he could smell an unholy alliance between the pro-Jonathan group and the Senate President, David Mark in the entire plot. He, was, however, optimistic that though the acting president would try to remove Yar’Adua’s structure using his reconstituted executive council yet, he said, the entire plot would fail. Noting that the removal of Yar’Adua constitutionally required the Senate president and the speaker to sign the medical report in the event that the new executive council got to that stage, he also added that given the history of the strained relationship between the Senate and the House of Representatives, it was unlikely that both chambers would ever find a meeting point in the unholy plot. But to Speaker Dimeji, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai noted that given that there have been previous attempts to remove him from office by forces loyal to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, “the speaker must note that the fight is not just for Yar’Adua, but he is fighting to protect his own position too. His position as the speaker of the Federal House of Representatives will be endangered once he allows Yar’Adua’s own to come to threat.” He further alleged that from the beginning, all the crises were orchestrated by the Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, in a bid to realize his political ambition. According to him, a few hours before Yar’Adua departed from Nigeria, he made frantic efforts to meet with his Deputy, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan through his aides. But he added that somehow, Jonathan made himself inaccessible as at then, only to call on phone shortly before the departure of Yar’Adua’s plane. He recalled that even then, President Yar’Adua had urged him to assume all the duties of the president. Hear him repeat what Yar’ Adua told Jonathan: “I am traveling now; I leave everything under your care. You are free to run the country as you deem fit. You can refer to me only when you feel that there is a need to refer to me.” Alhaji Tanko went on: “But immediately he (Yar’Adua) left, Dr. Jonathan refused to do anything. Even those things that he was doing when Yar’Adua was around, he simply stopped doing them all. He refused to do anything on the grounds that Yar’Adua has not handed over to him and so, the files kept piling until it reached the point when the party leadership of the PDP went to see him.” http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2010/mar/25/national-25-03-2010-018.htm |
