Robert Mugabe: The Syndrome Of Sit Tight Presidents In Africa by Ugik(m): 10:55am On Nov 26, 2017 |
Robert mugabe fought for the independence of Zimbabweans and thereafter held on to power for 37years.Now he has gone, another sit tight president has emerged and only time will prove me right. Who is Robert Mugabe? This is the case of a man who was considered a revolutionary, did his best for the independence of Zimbabwe from the Rhodesian regime of ian smith.. He is a man respected by the entire black race but unlike nelson Mandela who he shares a lot of similarities with,he lost his way. Instead of building strong Democratic institutions and hand over to the younger generation, like most African leaders, he began to act like an authoritarian, abandoning the nationalism interest of Zimbabwe and creating his own Marxist ideology. He also got himself wrapped up in the cloaks of an ambitious wife who wasn't born during the liberation struggle try to usurp position and become president. Nasimgbe Yadena ruled Togo for 38years, Felix oboah, Sasa Agwero, Mahmoud Ghadafi, Olushegun Obasanjo and so many past and present African leaders held and are still holding unto power for years. There is an element of diarchy in Africas political system. Its not in our culture to sit tight in office but this practice is a manifestation of greed. Sit tight syndrome is something even the OAU has condoned cos if they condemn this practice of perpetuation of power,it won't be a normal thing here. Most of these African leaders come with bogus ideas which is usually different from the philosophy of nationalism. Mugabe for instance, sacked his VP and the question is does their constitution permit him to sack the VP? Removing his VP was a political miscalculation. African leaders need to understand that political goodwill is fluid and time alters relevance. African leaders overstay their welcome and end up not adding value to the country. We need to learn from other western civilization. Our leaders travel to these countries and see how things are done there. We must build our continent and our continent can only grow with the presence of strong institutions and not strong leaders |

Sunofgod:The Queen doesn't ‘run’ the UK, she has minimal direct power, unlike Mugabe. It’s the Prime Ministers who hold that kind of exertion of power and whilst they aren’t perfect either, the poverty in the two nations can’t be compared, the UK also aren’t being governed under a tyrannical dictatorship. Huge difference 2 Likes 1 Share |

ibkayee: The economy hardships for Zim was well orchestrated by the West.... Remember Mugabe took back lands from the White Zimbabweans and gave back to the rightful owners of the country the Black Zimbabweans that one move brought about sanctions from the West that crippled Zimbabwe economy. There are few European leaders who have overstayed their welcome, Angela Merkel if Germany and her party have been in power for over a decade now yet no one has raised a finger to ask questions if she were to be an African leader the West would have come for her! 2 Likes 1 Share |

MrDude:I respect Mugabe as a freedom fighter but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s also run Zimbabwe into the ground. Merkel doesn’t tweak the country's constitution to extend her stay like African leaders, she also isn’t running a poverty stricken failed state, this is such a false equivalence 2 Likes 2 Shares |

ibkayee: Merkel never had to face unfair economic sanctions for taking back ancestral lands from the hands of White farmers like Mugabe had. Zimbabwe was relatively govern well right until the sanctions came rolling. Mugabe won't be cowed by the West, that aside Mr Mugabe had overstayed his welcome and needed to vacate the seat of power that I agreed. |

MrDude:Corruption and misrule destroyed Zimbabwe more than the sanctions |
