1. Clear salary arrears before Christmas, Buhari tells govs President Muhammadu Buhari, on Monday directed the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun; the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udo Udoma; and the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to work with state governors to ensure the payment of outstanding Paris Club refund before the end of the year. The President was said to have urged the governors to utilise the money to clear salary arrears they owed their workers before Christmas. The governors had earlier received 50 per cent of the refund, leaving a balance of 50 per cent which Buhari directed its payment on Monday. The President was said to have given the directive at a meeting he had with state governors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. According to information posted on one of the Presidency’s Twitter handles – @NGRPresident – the meeting featured discussions on the nation’s economy, workers’ welfare, as well as federal-state relations, among others. “President @MBuhari has directed the Ministers of @FinMinNigeria and Budget & National Planning and Governor @cenbank to commence negotiations with the Governors’ Forum to enable payment of outstanding Paris & London Club refunds before the end of the year,” the information read. 2. Physically challenged persons protest at NNPC over jobs There was heavy security presence at the headquarters of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in Abuja on Monday as physically challenged persons besieged the oil firm to stage a protest. It was gathered that the protesters were members of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Delta State Chapter, who demanded that the NNPC should fulfil its promise of providing jobs for physically challenged people. The protesters, who were more than 50 in number, displayed various placards in front of the headquarters of the corporation, a development that made security operatives from the Department of State Services, the police and the Nigerian Army to block the section of the dual carriage road that directly leads into the oil firm. 4. Shell in eye of the storm over ‘crimes’ in Ogoniland Three decades after alleged atrocities by Shell in Ogoniland, fresh evidence indicates the Anglo-Dutch oil giant may still have questions to answer. Amnesty International is calling on Nigeria, the United Kingdom and The Netherlands to investigate the company over a series of alleged crimes committed by the Nigerian military government in Ogoniland in the 1990s. The organisation has released a review of thousands of pages of internal company documents and witness statements as well as Amnesty International’s own archive from the period. “The evidence we have reviewed shows that Shell repeatedly encouraged the Nigerian military to deal with community protests, even when it knew the horrors this would lead to, such as unlawful killings, rape, torture and the burning of villages,” said Audrey Gaughran, Director of Global Issues at Amnesty International. 5. Pinnick tips Nigeria to win Russia 2018 World Cup. Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Amaju Pinnick yesterday in Lagos raised the stakes a notch higher when he said that the Super Eagles will win the Russia 2018 World Cup. Many pundits had picked the Super Eagles as one of the teams to watch in Russia following the manner they qualified for the World Cup, as well as the recent 4-2 defeat of one of the favourites, Argentina in an international friendly in the host country. But saying emphatically that Nigeria will win the competition raised some eyebrows with some people at the Sheba Event Centre, Maryland, asking if there were things the NFF president knew that other Nigerians are not aware of. 6. Atiku's exit: Accept my sympathy, Buhari tells Odigie-Oyegun President Muhammadu Buhari publicly expressed his sympathies to National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, over the exit of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, from the party. Yesterday, Buhari told Odigie-Oyegun, who joined top government officials at the venue of the inauguration of the National Minimum Wage Committee, led by former Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Ama Pepple, “accept my sympathy for losing a senior member of your party.” The president said this to Oyegun while acknowledging dignitaries who attended the event, ahead of his formal remarks on the occasion. Although the president did not mention Atiku by name, it was obvious he was referring to the former VP who publicly announced his resignation from the APC, last Friday. The former vice president, alongside others, contested for the party’s presidential ticket in 2014, ahead of the 2015 general elections. He, like other contestants, lost to Buhari. 7. Comptroller-General of Prisons, Jaáfaru Ahmed has approved the recommendation of the Zonal Disciplinary Committee for the dismissal of 8 junior officers for various offences. They were found guilty of trafficking (smuggling) prohibited items such as mobile phones, India hemp and other intoxicating substances into the prison yard. 8. Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has accused the Federal Government of being unserious with the clean-up of Ogoniland. The Governor noted that the devastation of Ogoniland has impoverished the people by destroying their farmlands and fishing waters. 9. Four people were on Monday confirmed dead after a gas cylinder exploded at a fuel station in Orji, Owerri North local government area of Imo State. According to police, several other customers who were buying fuel and other petroleum products were also seriously wounded in the explosion. 10. President Muhammadu Buhari is set to depart Nigeria for Ivory Coast today to attend the 5th European Union-African Union (EU-AU) Summit in Abidjan. According to a statement by Femi Adesina, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, President Buhari will “participate in working sessions on the Summit theme: “Investing in the Youth for a Sustainable Development,” and on the margins of the Summit, meet with a number of African Heads of State and their European Union counterparts. http://www.naijanewspapers.com.ng/2017/11/nigerian-newspapers-summary-10-top_27.html |
