What happened between you and your record label owners, Kennis Music?

Right from my last album, Maga Don Pay, Kennis Music has not paid me. When I was with Kennis, 70 per cent of the shows I did were, as I was made to understand free. When I later found out that they have been collecting money from these people, they now assured me that they were going to pay me. They have being collecting money from them and claiming that the shows were all complimentary.

30 per cent of the shows I did for Kennis came through my manager, Pental. Even the show they did for Glo, one laughter whatever, featuring Basket Mouth, they were paid, but nobody gave me a dime. Apart from that, Kennis used to block my shows. People who wanted me to do a show for them were turned down; they were often told that I was not in town, meanwhile, I’ve been in town since December 24 last year. Kennis has been chopping my money; why? What have I done to them? Is it wrong for me to believe their words?

But you were aware of the purported fraudulent activities of Kennis, before signing a contract with them.

Yes, Kennis Music is trying. Kennis Music did not make Tuface what he is today, because they are not God. It is only God that has placed him where he is today. Kennis are businessmen who just want to make money. They were only managing him and trying to make things happen. Kennis has never sourced for event for him; never. And again, most of those who left Kennis did not leave well. Edris did not leave well, but I hear that he has gone back. Sound Sultan is not happy, Marvellous Benji is equally not happy, and for me, I’ve been trying my best to stay with them, but I can’t just carry on; I can’t be a fool forever. I have brought myself too low for them.

Did you at any point in time have this misunderstanding or fight with them?

No, I can’t fight them. Why should I? God will be the one to fight them. What I did was, when this issue was coming up, I told them that I have been with them for six months without cheque and that I wanted to know what was happening. So, I went back to America, but they told me to come back for the Kennis Music Easter Fiesta. I said okay and that they should send me about $200,000 so I could do some shopping for the event. This prompted them to ask me to write an application. I wondered why my own record label should ask me to write an application.

It was from then I said enough, let Kennis be on his own, and I on my own. So, I decided to send my lawyer to them. They became angry and in turn sent their lawyer to me. Right now, both lawyers are discussing, but I had to leave because I can’t wait.

So, what record label are we looking at this time around, since you are coming out with a new album?

Right now, everybody has to keep his fingers crossed. For now it’s just Maga Music, because I can’t say anything considering the situation of things. Right now, there are so many companies and marketers around me so, I can’t really say, because anything you say behind, you will have to take it like that. It’s not something I can disclose at the moment. All I know is that the album is going to be wicked. You guys should be expecting something like eight to ten tracks.

I hope it would be better than your first album, because one reason I guess gave that album a large sale, was because of the record label,

The first one cannot match this one, in fact, if there is a way of telling people not to buy that one, I will be very happy. The album is going to be ‘bad’. I have songs like Onye ga-agba egwu, and the likes. I have traditional songs; songs for burials as well as weddings. I really went round; I didn’t just sit in one place. Right now, I am working on a foundation called 419. We are going to be fighting corruption.

As it is now, it seems Kennis Music is a ‘no-go’ area. What is your advice to upcoming acts that are eager to contract Kennis?

They shouldn’t run, they shouldn’t be scared, all they need to do is to make the contract straight. Before you sign anything, you must go with your lawyer. I am not pursuing anybody from Kennis. People should do business with them, but they should be careful. Open your eyes.

In your case, before you signed, were you with your lawyer?

Yes. Kennis came to LA (Los Angeles) to meet me. They told me they liked my music and they would love to work with me. So, I asked them if they were going to get me a house, car and other necessary things I needed, and they said yes. They said I should stick to their word. So, after printing the papers, with those needs in place, I and my lawyer signed. But now, they are telling me stories.

What stories?

They can’t even get a house; instead, they want me to live in their house. I can’t do that. Even the car issue is a serious one.

For how long was the contract suppose to last?

We signed a six year contract. That contract is what I call a ‘contract of slavery’.
