Why do we forget so easily? Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) conducted the first succesful kidney transplant in Nigeria over a decade ago (2006). Since then, other tertiary hospitals in the country followed the AKTH footsteps. Suprisingly, I saw stories flying this morning that Federal Medical Centre Umuahia recorded "the first succesful kidney transplant in Nigeria". Iko sai Allah!

AKTH did its first kidney transplant in 2003. It was done by Dr. Kamal Abu Sin- a UK based Sudanese surgeon. Subsequently Dr Paul Lear also helped the program. Since then the hospital has done several transplants- all done by its own local surgeons led by Dr Sani Alhassan.

Actually the first kind transplant was done in St Nicholas Lagos in 2001

AKTH did not only achieve the feat of first renall transplant, she also became the first and the only facility to do it ROUTINELY.
Although the waiting list is lengthy due to the 3 months waiting period.
What this means is that the knowledge has become fully domesticated and the facilities available.
The few other centres who achieved a similar feat relied heavily on expertise and facilities from elsewhere outside the country. The result is you never hear of another transplant from such centres.
Kano is the only centre that has the ability to do it routinely!
We, on this side of the Niger, we don't know how to brag or blow our trumpet.

If you read your post very well you would see that the kidney transplant of AKTH kano was supervised by 2 urologist from Britain while that of FMC Umuahia was done without any external support or supervision.


The second report you posted showed that it was actually done by a Sudanese doctor based in UK and assisted by Dr Paul Lear who is not from kano.


That done in FMC Umuahia was done 100% by Igbo doctors with no external help or assistance.
