Lokoja – Mohammed Enesi, the newly-elected president of the National Association of Polytechnics Students (NAPS), has reiterated his commitment to work with relevant stakeholders to remove the dichotomy placed between bachelor’s degree (BA or BSc) and Higher National Diploma (HND).
Speaking immediately he was inaugurated on Wednesday in Lokoja to pilot the affairs of the students’ body, Enesi said “this is to boost the morale of polytechnics students”.
With the promise to run an open-door policy capable of taking polytechnics education to an enviable height, he added that NAPS under his watch would be restructured to meet the yearnings of the parents, students and schools’ management.
The NAPS president noted that the challenges before his administration include how best to permanently tackle the monster of BSC/HND dichotomy, which has left polytechnics graduates as second rate in the scheme of national importance. He called on all stakeholders to join in the crusade to abolish the disparity.
Frowning at the policy of JAMB to deviate from the unified cut-off marks for all the tertiary institutions in the country to a reduction of cut off marks for the polytechnics, he said it is not only uncalled for but a tacit approval to keep the dichotomy in place.
He vowed to mobilise students of all the polytechnics across the country to protest the policy, adding that all admission seekers were not treated differently by the public examination.
He urged all the state governments as well as federal ministries and parastatals that were yet to remove the discrimination to emulate the Kano State government that complied with FG directives, advising employers of labour to concentrate on competence rather than just the nomenclature of the institutions.
Enesi challenged government to devote its energies to the funding of technical education, which is the bedrock of development, noting that the present lip service paid by the government to technical education would continue to make the country a dumping ground by more serious economies of the world.
“I want to assure you that your coming to the polytechnics is not a mistake. You are here to acquire technical education to be productive to yourselves and the nation. We would not allow the unjust policy of the government to dampen your spirits. We are going to ensure that the discrimination be permanently removed, no matter what it will take us to achieve.”
