The Nigerian military yesterday defended the Federal Government’s plan to spend $1bn on fighting insurgency.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, the Director of Defence Information, Major General John Enenche, explained that among other things, the fund will help to phase out the military’s obsolete weapons.

He explained that specifically, it will enable the military’s air, land and sea forces to purchase more sophisticated weapons and machinery.

First of all, e-get-as-the-thing-be, like a smear at the centre of a page one cannot get the measure off even having turned it this way and that. I scratch my stubbles jaws, for the sum is a paltry $1 billion dollars for a nation the size of Nigeria, given current domestic insecurities and those brewing in the neighbourhood. Yet there's controversy. An individual cannot even get into the meat and gristle of what's prudent in the arms market, for this meagre amount of money, without being made to feel stupid or uncaring by the Millennium Developmental Goals social minded advocates. In addition to this, you're deafened by the moral blackmail whining from activist for Delta State indigents underdevelopment wrongs under the auspices of “Our -Oil -Our -Money”. In another corner, the “All Nigerian Politicians Are Corrupt” brigade have taken to Social Media to point out that the $1Billion is all about up coming national election. Then the authorities hastily backtrack, arguing that the $1billion isn't for military spending alone. Sigh, one paltry billion dollars in the trough and there's already a deluge of snouts, snuffling away at such a decibel you'd believe that they were at a feast. And we've not yet added the sure to come disapproving snuffles of our Western benefactors since we've condescended to their stringy aid up North for our Boko-dispossessed.

Come on people, $1billion is nothing compared to the cost we are going to pay in the future for we really are in the shadows of grave internal and existential threats.
