This is what a Library looks like - USIU Library in Nairobi, Kenya built for $6 million or 1.8 billion Naira Just look at the design and this is what you get when you use proper architects. The State Government needs to do something about Kenneth Dike Library in Awka. Furnish it properly, get a good architect to landscape the grounds, plant some trees, put benches and build an art and sculpture gallery there. Go and get funding from big Anambra people, diaspora and educational-related orgs like Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, UNICEF, etc. Same goes for libraries in other major cities across the state - Onitsha, Nnewi. Half of the population of the state is school age and an investment in libraries is an investment in the youth. 7 Likes 1 Share

Unbiased1: Library is for many things not just cursory research on one's phone. Libraries is a symbol of civilisation. The great library of Alexandria was one of the great libraries of Ancient Egypt. The British Library is the largest library in the world. The American public library system provides accessibility to all rich and poor. Indeed more than half of young adults and seniors living in poverty in the United States used public libraries to access the Internet...to “find work, apply to college, secure government benefits, and learn about critical medical treatments”. The NYPL also shares its books to all New York public schools saving them on book purchase expenses. (see: https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidvinjamuri/2013/01/16/why-public-libraries-matter-and-how-they-can-do-more/#1b8ebcb469be) A library is a foundation of knowledge and a theatre for learning. They are good for children to go to after school to do their homework for example. It is good to use as a place to prepare for exams. They are places good for meetings, book readings or visits of literary folks like Chimamanda Adichie. They have many uses and are not going anywhere yet. I hope the State government takes its libraries very seriously and provides adequate direction. The Kenneth Dike Library was a good initative of the Peter Obi administration but it requires better furnishing and they need to make the threadbare grounds useful. I suggested that they build a small Arts/Culture gallery in the ground and plant some trees in other parts and put benches and concrete tables. Sometimes one wants to read outside in fresh air or maybe just go take a look at artwork or crafts display. Arts is inspirational and is the essence of life. The Igbos are famous for the Igbo-Ukwu bronzes to the sculptural master Ben Enwonwu to Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda Adichie. Look at the current dilapidated state of Onitsha Library (Can we not do better?): 5 Likes 2 Shares

All these seeking for notice attitudes by the police, so the essence of going to Onitsha is to advise his colleagues who mounted uncountable road blocks not to cause grid locks......infact is a regrettable situation. I commend the vigor and enthusiasm of builders of AMC. Indeed they are true to their word. Please any updates on The Airport? 2 Likes |

investnow2013: 300k per annum? Is it a 3 bedroom apartment? How would students pay school fees and still pay a whooping 300k for a 1 room hostel? This one is not philanthropy at all, this is pure business. 4 Likes |

BeachTime: Nigerian architecture is a function of the mediocre, corrupt way we approach things starting from the biggest business of all - government. How many Nigerian public works are works of art? In a country with incredible art legacy. I visited the UN building in New York years ago and see architecture and sculpture. One of its best is the anyanwu sculpture by Ben Enwonwu. There is nothing like excellence in architecture to attract and inspire people. People go to Egypt to see 4,000 year old pyramids and the Valley of the Kings. They go to Spain to see La Sagrada Familia. The little island of Zanzibar is famous for these huge beautifully carved doors. The Americans have the Washington monument. The brits boast of Westminister palace. The Australians the iconic Sydney Opera House. What wondrous modern Igbo public architecture can any igbo state government boast? Is it those grotesque sculptures at roundabouts that Obianos cronies are building that are enriching cement dealers? ANSG should open themselves up to the art community. Infuse art and sculpture and landscaping in public buildings and spaces. Create parks, Beautiful things attract and inspire people. 3 Likes |
