There are so many Chinese firms that bidded for this Onitsha port, they should give it to one of them to operate.

INLAND Container Nigeria Limited (ICNL); operators of Kaduna Inland Dry Port (KIDP) has expressed its confidence and competence to run the Onitsha River Port.

Speaking with journalists in Lagos recently, Managing Director of ICNL; Mr. Yusuf Ismail, said that the company has tendered its bidding for the concessioning of the Onitsha River Port, even as he expressed confidence that the company has what it takes to operate the port.

Ismail also said that as the first successful ICD operator in Nigeria, other operators of ICDs in all the geo-political zones of Nigeria have been coming to his company for advice on how to run ICD projects. According to him, one of the companies is the Edo Inland Container Depot.

We participated in the bidding for concession of Onitsha River Port which we are waiting for the result. So any time from now the Federal Government will announce the winner. If we are lucky to win it, we are going to run the Onitsha River port too. What is the difference between the seaport and the dry port?”

Speaking further on the operation of river ports in Nigeria, he said “if government wants it functional, they will call investors to come and invest in them and give them the guidelines. They should put policies in place and there should be a regulatory body that will make sure it works. So that is how it is going to work.

“Everything lies in government hands. Even the port we are looking at here in Apapa, Tin-Can and everywhere; if government wants it to work, it will work.

It wasn’t like this in the early 1990s and early 2000 before the ports were handed over to private investors,” he added.

That time, it took us 30, 40 days to take containers out of the port. But when the private investors came onboard, things changed for the better”, he added.

Beware of the northern political game in running ports. They want to sit at Onitsha and collect customs duty and ferry it back to the north just like they do in Apapa. Any port in Nigeria should be concessioned to non-political international investors. We don't need another Intels of Yar'adua, Atiku and Mangal that single-handedly made Warri, Port Harcourt and Calabar far more expensive than even Cotonou or Lome.

I am amazed that no Anambra indigene bidded for the port. Where is Denca services? If a northerner takes over the port, we do we blame?

You reason like someone with brain trauma. Which enabling environment and infrastructure are you talking about? Anambra already has the best infrastructure and enabling environment for businesses to thrive, that's why the headquarters of Ibeto group, Cutix Plc, Adswitch Plc, Kotec group (parent company of Tummy-Tummy food industries) and many others are in Nnewi. In Onitsha, Africana-First Publishers (the third biggest book publishing company in Nigeria) have their headquarters. MBI Obosi, the only private-owned television station in the east is in the Onitsha area. And numerous other large and medium factories whose operational headquarters are in Onitsha. In Awka, Orient Petroleum has its headquarters. Which other state in the east boasts of more corporate headquarters?

Spotlight on Oilserv, an indigenous oil and gas servicing coy. They're currently building the largest size gas pipeline in Africa (the east-west gas pipeline), as well as the biggest gas treatment plant in Nigeria.

Engr Emeka Okwuosa is the Chairman and Chief Executive of the coy.

The major cost of gas utilization is processing. Anambra should be pushing for Shell to extend gas pipelines into the state from Imo where they have a presence. Look at how the west African gas pipeline transformed industry in Lagos and Ogun.

Anambra Govt Sets Up Committee For State Transport Sector Master Plan
20 JUNE 2018

WRITTEN BY KENECHUKWU OFOMAH
The State Government has set up a committee to develop a comprehensive master plan for the State transportation sector.
The Committee was set up during yesterday's meeting of the State Executive Council held at the Government House, Awka.

The Committee which is to be headed by the Commissioner for Road, Rail and Water Transportation, Mr. Uchenna Okafor, has at least six weeks to develop the master plan.

Briefing newsmen after the Exco meeting, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Chief James Eze revealed that the committee has among its terms of reference, to develop a plan for construction of modern bus terminals and Bus stops in Awka, Onitsha and Nnewi as well as initiating a blueprint for the construction of a light rail track across the state.

The master plan also entails the revamping of the State Mass transit buses known as Willie is working buses and the provision of jetties in riverine areas to improve water transportation in the State.

Other responsibilities of the committee include working out modalities for installation of security cameras to track traffic offenders and for security, marking of roads, and to advise government on how best to introduce an indigenous transport system close to Uber services.

The Chief Press Secretary who noted that Anambra as a gateway to the south east, is a centre of commerce and logistics, emphasized that it is expected of any proactive government to look beyond its present gains and challenges and chart a more progressive and sustainable transportation system for it.

According to him, this is why the present administration is taking some measures to overhaul the subsisting transportation system in the State to make it more effective and responsive.

He reechoed the position of the State Government on the proposed ban on Okada in Onitsha and Awka by the 1st of next month, urging all involved to start taking steps to ensure compliance with the directive.

Gas fields need drilling, removal of water and sediments and compression. It is very expensive and requires the assurance of long term contracts by offtakers. The shell gas processing facility in Okoloma cost over 200 million dollars. It's why states that exploit gas tap into existing pipelines.

Shell has pipelines in Egbema and Oguta. ANSG should have negotiated for pipelines to supply the Hero brewery and Harbor Industrial Park in Onitsha as a start and then eventually Nnewi and Awka.

Unless there are geniuses in the committee a masterplan will take more than six weeks. Certain things like decongesting streets are easy. Get rid of okada, ban trailers from city roads at peak times, ban keke on expressways and high traffic roads. But the hard work is surveying people movement and creating the proper routes and bus stops and schedules and bus terminals and parking zones and laws.

The average large global city with 10 million people has around 5,000 50 seater buses and 500 routes. Onitsha where probably 50,000 people move into the city every day can provide manageable public transport if you get the bus sizes right, bus stops right and schedules right. Moving 10,000 people at peak should be easier using 100 50 seaters rather than 350 14 seater Toyota buses.

Obiano Empowers Okada Operators With N765m, Makes Them Bus Owners

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has set aside N765m for commercial motorcyclists in the state to enable them to purchase shuttle buses following the government’s decision to restrict them from operating in Awka, the state capital, and Onitsha, the Southeast commercial hub, from July 1.

The funds will be accessed through the Anambra State Small Business Agency (ASBA).
Existing commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada operators, will take delivery of the buses once they deposit N100,000 with ASBA, undertaking to make payments every two weeks, according to the Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr C. Don Adinuba, who disclosed that the interest-free loan can be repaid within a year and a half.

The shuttle buses will cost between N700,000 and N800,000 each.

The first set of 200 units of the 1000 buses in the scheme will arrive in the state anytime from now from Japan.

Mr Adinuba, in a statement, said that the Obano administration decided to phase out Okada operations in Awka and Onitsha so as to economically empower the operators and quicken the process of turning the state into a modern place like Dubai.

“A situation where some members of the public have been made to believe that they cannot rise beyond the level of Okada riders is unfair and offends good conscience”, the commissioner noted.

“Governor Obiano wants commercial motorcyclists to get to the next level by becoming bus owners.

“Bus ownership will generate far more revenues for the present Okada riders because whereas a motorcyclist is not allowed to have more than one passenger at a time, a shuttle bus can carry as many as seven passengers”.

Adinuba said that another reason for the decision to phase out Okada operations in the stae’s two leading cities is the plan to make Anambra State the “Dubai of Africa within the next few decades, a status which no place can attain by making Okada dominate the entire landscape”.

He also stated that the high rate of serious road accidents involving Okada riders and their passengers is another reason for the restriction.

He declared: “Up to 70% of accident cases in orthopaedic and other hospitals in Anambra State and beyond involve commercial motorcycle crashes, and it is not right for any government which cares for the welfare and future of its citizens not to do anything about this phenomenon considering that the safety of every individual is the primary constitutional responsibility of the state”.

What is more, he continued, “many robberies and other violent crimes throughout Nigeria have been traced to people using commercial motorcycles. We do not want anything which can compromise our hard earned reputation as Nigeria’s safest state”.

The Information Commissioner disclosed that Anamba did not follow other Southeastern states to restrict Okada operations when they did because Obiano was developing a scheme to “provide the people of the state with superior services and make the Okada operators more productive agents of our economy.

“The delay is worth it because Governor Obiano did not want the Okada operators to be out of employment. What is more, we are today proud of our record as perhaps the only government in Nigeria’s history to provide Okada riders with buses”.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State empowerment programme for commercial motorcyclists has been generating reactions.

The chairman of the Okada Riders Association in the state, Jude Udegbe, described it “as another evidence of Obiano’s humane nature” while the chairman of the state branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Jerry Nnubia, called it a welcome development “which has the potential to dramatically improve the lives of Okada operators and reduce the crime rate in our state”.

The chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the state, Comrade Ifeanyi Okechukwu, said it shows that “the governor’s second tenure will witness a radical improvement in all sectors”.
