Tim Berners-Lee is a name that almost no one in America recognizes. He invented the World Wide Web almost single-handedly and that’snot even the most amazing aspect of his life. Inventing the World Wide Web would conservatively make anyone with even some business sense a billionaire, and someone who truly maintained ownership of it and rented access, domain names and the ability to traffic information through it could have theoretically become a trillionaire. Tim Berners-Lee chose instead to give the innovation of Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and the World Wide Web to society with no strings attached.

The inventor of the World Wide Web

Here are three ways Tim Berners-Lee could have become the wealthiest person in the World by a factor of more than 10.

True . but he might really not get it commercialized successfully . Seun has done well with Nairaland, but you will all agree that the amount of business deal going on on Nairaland without his knowledge will be so much that if he charge a percentage for every successful deal, he will be among worlds richest.
I'm sure this man to made some money , but his invention outgrows him

Don't mind the OP, Sir Tim Berners-Lee is worth $50 million and is currently a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Oxford. He is also a senior researcher at MIT. So the man is definitely not broke.

He might not be rich like owners of Internet business giants like Facebook, Google and Amazon. But he's definitely not poor. I heard sometimes ago that Google gave him a huge amount of gift in cash honoring his works on invention of the Internet. He's definitely not broke. Nigerian bloggers can fabricate any lies to generate traffic to their websites

His invention outgrew him because he isn't so smart at the business.
If Mark Zuckerberg or Google founders invented it,there's no way they'll not be trillionaires

If you consider what he would have made as the inventor of the internet to $50m, I think you'd understand the OP's point.

Monetisation of certain forms of technologies could actually stifle their growth. That is why the most popular forms of technology today run on open source platforms and that's really, the future of the techworld today. As example looks at Android, Linux, Apache,Bitcoins, MP3 etc etc.

Guess what! If he didn't do what he did, internet won't have grown to become a multi-billion dollar industry it is. Nobody would make billions on it and there won't be Facebook or Google. He would have stifled the great invention and another generous soul will do something better and open source it and make Tim's invention useless. We should just be grateful for this man's big heart and stop talking as if he made a mistake with open-sourcing the Internet. Afterall he's not crying and regretting his actions and very few people in the world make 50 million dollars before their fulfilling lives come to an end.

I think the OP wants us to believe that he's very broke like Eboue's kind of broke. A net worth of $50M is a lot, the man is very wealthy.

Op is definitely on weed. Just because he's not in the news definitely doesn't mean he's poor. Even if he's broke, help will never be far away from him - never.

OP made it look like the man is dime broke and regretting his action. If he had made the internet free, the internet industry wouldn't have boom like it is now or someone or an organization would have created an alternative for free.

So, someone with 50 million dollars is considered broke just because he'd could have made more than that if he had desired it. He's not broke because he didn't have more than that in the past.
Poor should have been a better word, definitely not broke.

I dont know why people will call someone with 50 million dollars(not naira o) poor. If that is the case, then anyone who is not in the top100 richest is also poor.
