That is always my advice: stay back and retake the exam next year.
@OP: Staying back removed all the distractions of campus life and allows you prepare adequately for the next Jamb. But if you are in a hurry (for whatever reason) then you can go ahead and start a course you obviously have no passion for.
I disagree. I was given something I did not want, but I accepted and did Jamb with knowledge I gained which helped to do well in JAMB in the next one I took. I know quite a number of who did the same like me.

Yes. A female friend of mine applied to Calabar to study MBBS, but was given either Geology or Botany, she declined and sat for Jamb again, she is doing her clinical year at IMSUTH now.

That's the beauty of life: there's always a variety of ideas and precedents to choose from. I went my direction, it turned out great. You went yours, perfect. It is now left for the OP to carefully consider his options and take his stand.

There are less competitive courses that are also lucrative and marketable just in case you can get a change of course. The courses are
1. Pharmacy
2. Nursing science
3. Medical laboratory science
4. Radiography
5. Physiotherapy
6. Optometry ( but am not sure if BUK is doing it sha)
If u can get any of these course you are good to go.

this dude got good advice for you, take the botany and work hard both in 2018 jamb and grabbing a competitive grade in botany so as to increase your chances of migrating to a related course should mbbs fail

Please I apply for MBBS in Bayero University Kano (BUK) with Jamb score of 263 and post Jamb with 272 and my average was 267.5. I heard some good grade in my O'Level result with,
1. English: B3
2. Mathematics: B3
3. Physics: A1
4. Biology: A1
5. Chemistry: C4.
I was expecting at least medical related courses, unfortunately they shift me from MBBS to Botany. Please what can I do with Botany because I don't want to loose another year again?

Thanks for your good suggestion!

Please if you don't have any positive suggestion to contribute just ignore it.

What you need is just to buy another Jamb form and prepare for another Jamb. Delete the course from your mind and have a high hope that you will pass your Jamb and get your heart desired course. My own shoe I was forced to take the course by elder siblings and my parents chased out of the house to take the course but guess what. You can force a horse to the stream but you can't force it to drink water. I took the admission but had 0% interest in all the course activities. I stabbed lectures and practical. But today am in my Final Year Medicine and Surgery.

In 2010 I was given Botany instead of Medicine and Surgery in UNN. I wrote another jamb and deleted my mind from the course and whatever the outcome might be,even if I fail my Jamb or they withhold my result, I will not be sad, since I have made up my mind never to do that course in my life. I was reading and my course mate were always discouraging me from taking another course(because most of us were in the same shoe as those who got the course through supplementary list and we are wounded doctors then and shows me the importance of the Botany. Am not saying is a bad course or I can't be rich but that is not my heart desired course.

I wrote Jamb and I went for UI interview and I was admitted to Study Medicine and Surgery which was my heart desired course.

Pls never let your course mates/ room mates not know about your intention because they can never encourage you. Some will tell you that your Jamb will be withheld.

Others will say how can you begin 100level all over again.

Some will say you are wasting money

Others will say how old are you that it is not what you studied that gives you work in future

Most importantly know that you alone will suffer the consequences of your actions in choosing your career. Make a wise decision now. Nobody will bear your cross not even YOUR Parents or Siblings.

Guy just take the course, if you don't you might not even have the chance next year...... Continue with Botany and reapply for Jamb next year something better might come up and if not you still have ur Botany..... Don't waste too many years. Salam

From the look of your result you are an above above average student. You should stick to your dream, don't be pressured into accepting what isn't your heart. Botany is great but MBBS is better. My advice? Get enrolled into a jamb preparatory class and try your luck in another school, perhaps UNN.

Accept Botany and become a Botanist later. You don't know the difference between present and past tense. You said 'they shift you to Botany' instead of shifted. So, accept the course in good faith o relocate to a motor park.

My son, you have apparently done very well to get those scores. Bear in mind that your dreams should never die, NO MATTER WHAT.
Firstly, you have to ask yourself what you really want and to what extent you're willing to go in pursuit of what you want, and forthwith give it your most positive energies and galvanize yourself towards it.

I see you're ardently interested in being a Doctor, I'd advice you to keep up with the ambition, because ultimately, what matters most would be fulfillment.
Do not let prevailing circumstances prevent you from getting to what you dream of.
Give it another shot, Son.
all the best.

Cheers. . . .

I think it's time universities stopped offering students courses they never applied for ! This is the reason why many graduates are unemployed and roaming the streets. People apply to study courses they have passion for only for them to be thrown into those courses they don't like. That's very wrong ! Many of them accept the admission out of desperation only to graduate and discover that they have no job opportunities.

I think it is better for universities to advertise available courses after merit admission list has been released so that students can decide which one to choose.

Op, you may go ahead and accept the botany but make sure you prepare well and write JAMB next year. Never settle for less !

Best advice I can give u is this:

1. Enter the Botany and be very serious with your academics, if u score good grades then you can transfer to medicine at the end of your 100 level

2. While doing 1 above, register for another Jamb as most of the subjects you will be taught in your 100level will be applicable for Jamb so you will kill 2 birds with one stone..

All the best...

Coming to Nairaland to ask for advice will get you more confused. Anyway I read Botany, there's no much opportunity in this field except you want to go in the line of academia I.e becoming a lecturer which will take up to 6years or more before you start lecturing. How old are you? if age is not catching up with you,, your impressive waec result can give you admission Even in a better school and a better course (if it wasn't a miracle centre ).
if age is catching up with you, you can as well take the Botany course and apply for another jamb.

Your post/suggestion makes it seem you assumed financial benefits to be the sole reason for studying courses.
he hasn't stated that he intended studying MBBS simply because of money or what not, but you had to do a comparison of courses based on their estimated income.

Also, no course is overrated, as the income for several courses are largely dependent on the economy of the country one practices in.
take the case you gave as example, you stated that yoruba graduates over there earn more than Doctors here, a simple question which would logically follow; DO THE YORUBA GRADUATES EARN 1/5TH AS MUCH AS THE DOCTORS THERE??
Don't be misleading, there are several reasons one would want to study a course, it could be money, passion, influences etc.
Don't limit the OP by making it seem like MBBS isn't lucrative while studying a Nigerian language is. . .

Cheers. . .

I'll advice you to take the botany as a backup plan same thing happened to me I went for mbbs but was given geology. Besides if you take your 100 level serious you'll ace jamb and post jamb. So just take it and write jamb next year. And when you about to pick school, choose wisely another thing which affected my chances was this indigene stuff people I aced were given mbbs and related courses but I was thrown to geology cos I'm not an indigene so I'll advice you to pick a school in your state and work very hard.......... NAMASTE

Re: From MBBS To Botany, Please I Need Suggestion! by Acheron: 9:00am On Dec 28, 2017
Brother, do whatever it takes to get that MBBS if that's what will make you live a fulfilled life. If I can take back the hands of time, I would retake jamb as many times as possible until I get MBBS instead of moving on with the course I was given. No matter the level of greatness you reach in any course, as long as its not your dream course, you'll never be fulfilled.

Go after MBBS with all you've got. Even if it's going to take you 5years (God forbid) to ace it, don't ever stop trying.

All the best, bro.
