Mathematicians And Physicists. Your Help Needed by Nobody: 10:05am On Dec 30, 2017 |
∆ I no dey frown now Got stuck on a simple question for the past few hours... Here is the question: A body travels in a straight line and its speed at any time does not exceed 5m/s. If it accelerates and decelerates uniformly at 2m/s², find the shortest time required to cover a distance of 30m from rest to rest. cc: WiseandTrue ∆ |

Have you heard of differential calculus, if yes, apply it to equation of motion, you will get the answer like eating biscuits. |

LionDeLeo: ∆ Apply make I see am now... How differential calculus wan take work here I no know...?? ∆ |

OrestesDante:Okay, diff calculus would have made it very easy but since you don't know how it comes in, you can as well make a velocity-time graph. Note, the area under a velocity-time graph is the distance. Or is it just the answer you want? I can simply post the answer if that is what you want though. |

LionDeLeo: ∆ I know the area is the distance. But have you tried using your pen and paper to see what my question is all about? Moreover, the topic is under Mechanics and not calculus for now ∆ |
Re: Mathematicians And Physicists. Your Help Needed by Nobody: 10:45am On Dec 30, 2017 |
LionDeLeo: ∆ Post the answer and explain how you got it... You can simply work it out snap your working and upload.. Thanks!!! ∆ |
Re: Mathematicians And Physicists. Your Help Needed by LionDeLeo: 10:47am On Dec 30, 2017 |
OrestesDante:Calculus simplifies most mathematical problems, especially engineering. Mechanics is in engineering. Anyway, it takes a minimum of 8.5 sec to cover the said distance. Both calculus and graph provides same outcomes but calculus gave it in less than 2 minutes, graph takes a longer time. Calculus is not just studied for studying sake, it is studied because of its application in places like mechanics. |

LionDeLeo: ∆ ok. But using calculus as far as the topic is concerned is considered totally out of question... I'd love to know the Graph method. That's the scope for now ∆ |

OrestesDante:Anyway, since you don't seem to know how calculus comes in, let me post the graphical approach here. But in calculus, you simply differentiate the applicable equation (s=ut +1/2 at^2) with respect to t, then equate to zero to find the minimum value of t. Brb with the graph. |
