This is unfortunate, but a sad reality of the level of poverty in this country. They even intend selling the gravel with the way they stacked them. A scene from the movie, Hotel Rwanda flashed my mind upon seeing this sad picture. The scene where those affected by the war were allowed into the hotel premises which was used as a refuge camp. The refugees used up all the water in the swimming pool for cooking and drinking. A hungry man doesn't care about any luxury but for the next meal to eat. Education could have refined these people to know where not to search for their daily bread but when poverty meets illiteracy, the result is catastrophic for any nation. 163 Likes 10 Shares |

OneCorner: You dey your house dey talk. Do you see the hunger and depression in the eyes of those children ? Do they look like they eat 2 meals a day ? In a country where a road project can go on for decades eg Lagos-Ibadan, East -West road, you expect people to have patience and forbearance while fat cats in business and government skim off their share now ? Stop blaming the victims. Nigeria is a near failed state and the citizenry is not to blame 59 Likes 3 Shares |

IamaNigerianGuy: Thank you! I hate it when I hear or read people trying to act all politically correct by blaming the people/victims when it is glaring that same people have been so raped and debased that practically very vice has become normal and every sense of outrage is numbed. 18 Likes |

Here is what really happened. THE AKAGIDIGBO - UMOMI ISSUES AND THE ONGOING RECONSTRUCTION OF THE IDAH - UMOMI ROAD Yesterday, I made a post with pictorial evidence of how some villagers were packing the granites from the ongoing reconstruction of the Idah - Umomi road. I was suprised when I saw the strange happening involving some women, children and few adults men and women scampering for the granites specifically between Akagidigbo - Umomi axis of the road. When I stopped to make inquiries, they started running away except a young man that initially waited but on coming closer, he took off like others. It was while coming closer that I took the pictures using zoom effects. The immediate person that I contacted after the villagers were afraid to speak with me was Usman Ochidi who is the SA on Project Monitoring to the State Government. I promptly put a call and informed him of the development. I did not get feedback from him..... before I made the post yesterday (a day after) to draw the attention of the relevant authorities to that development. Just this afternoon, I received numerous calls from friends of how my pure intention was politically misrepresented for selfish and cheap blackmail by one Usman Okai Austin. I also received call from Usman Ochidi, the said SA Project Monitoring whom I had earlier contacted. The feedback from Hon. Usman this afternoon necessitated this post. He told me how he made further inquiries with the relevant authorities since he had earlier told me that he does not know why and on whose authorities the villagers were packing the granites. Mr Ochidi informed me that, just as he told me earlier that he was not aware of the development, my call also prompted him to contact the Chairman of the Company who also told him earlier that he was not aware of the development. Hon. Usman added that he also made further calls to the Administrator of Ofu LGA that day for him to investigate the reported case but the call was neither answered nor returned. That it was because he had no tangible information on the reported case that he did not get back to me before I made the post. He furthered informed me that it was after my post and the accompanying attention it generated that the Contractor only came out to claim responsibility for the instruction to the villagers. This mix up, though the post has achieved multiple unintended objectives beyond the unfortunate misrepresention of the action of the villagers, I AM SORRY and take full responsibility for that. Certainly, I cannot stereotype a community let alone the entire LGA as been mispresented. We are great people just as we should also be bold enough to point out errors correctly. Had it been that, Hon. Usman Ochidi got appropriate prompt response from those he contacted after I reported to him and i also got feedback from him, I shouldn't have made the post. Clearly, my intention is pure even as it unfortunately hurt some people. This is because of the fact that the Idah - Umomi road in question has been left abandoned for the past 13 years with numerous empty political promises as response to our hue and cry to that pivotal road to the traditional headquarters of Igala land. Beyond this, I have once again refrained myself from joining issues with Usman Okai Austin for the obvious reason that the eyes that knoweth someone in the night and come out in the day time to deny that person is an irresponsible one. I think those that are trying to ethnicise the issue and or making political meaning from the post should "traficate and park well.....". Even as I have serious issues with the action of the Contractor as it relates to the expected qualities of their work, I humbly reserve my comments for the sake of the members of the communities that were unfortunately misrepresented in the earlier post. Finally, those that shared the earlier post for political and or ethnic motives should also be bold enough to share this to balance the reported incidents accordingly. God bless you all. 4 Likes |

Stealing is bad, very bad and no justification was so ever is enough to make stealing sound good. Nigeria is at its lowest ebb, poverty is very much in the land, no education, no social amenities nothing nothing. Nigeria still have small morals, else we would have seen where the poor people turn against the elites and eat them raw 11 Likes |

this is really bad, no matter how incompetence our leaders are should not be a yard stick for this. like what the author pointed out the road has been abandon for years and by successive government no bodi care. and now you see some one that is trying to bring development to you, you are discouraging him by stealing the gravel. if am the contractor i will stop the work immediately. |

ruggedised:Whenever I think I've seen a post on Nairaland so dumb it can't be beaten, someone manages to outdo it, with the dubious "honors" in this case going to the inanity above. If I were the superstitious type, I'd be wondering right now if the poster's "village people" hadn't laid a curse on him or something! Your idiocy encapsulates everything that is wrong with Nigeria: 180 million idiots stealing everything they can while pointing fingers at others to excuse themselves by saying "the bosses/masses are stealing too", and yet they all wake up each day wondering why they live in such a god-forsaken hellhole where nothing works. If textbook writers are looking to illustrate the concept of tragedy of the commons, all they need to do is simply point to Nigeria. 40 Likes 7 Shares |

OneCorner:Two thumbs up to you for hitting the nail on the head! As much as Nigerians love to blame their leaders for short-sighted greed, the leaders are drawn from the self-same people, and therefore exhibit the same failings as the great majority of Nigerians - tribalism, ignorance, religious fanaticism, wishful thinking, and of course (the Nigerian specialty) extreme selfishness which manifests itself in compulsive thievery. As the OP's pictures vividly illustrate, the average Nigerian has no real concept of a "common good" to which he or she must pay attention, so why should the leadership be any better? 17 Likes 2 Shares |

sonofspada:Three mouth-breathers gave your absurd comments a thumbs up! Nigeria is truly finished as a country. Did it ever occur to you or your three cheerleaders that one major reason these villagers are so destitute is because there are no good roads leading to their village? What they are doing is the equivalent of a farmer consuming even the seeds he will need for his next planting: they are basically guaranteeing they will never have the smallest chance of rising out of the poverty they are stuck in. 13 Likes 5 Shares |

Pipelines, power cables, rail guards and now roads. Stealing gravel on the road in Dangote cement bags is probably harder than tilling the field and planting some seeds. 2 Likes |
