Government Will Regulate Herdsmen's Activities In Ondo - Akeredolu

Following incessant clashes between Fulani herdsmen and farmers in Ondo State , the state Governor, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has declared that the government will regulate the activities of the herdsmen to avert clashes with farmers.

Last week some suspected Fulani herdsmen allegedly invaded a farmland at Arodoye community, in the Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State and destroyed farm land.

The herdsmen also allegedly killed a female farmer, identified as Patience Salami. This was a major concern for the Governor, who immediately called the Police Commissioner, Ondo State Command, Mr. Gbenga Adeyanju, to be proactive in curtailing the activities of the herdsmen inimical to the relative peace in the State.

The Governor did not stop there, on Monday 8th January, 2018, Mr. Governor asked his Senior Special Assistant on Agriculture, Akin Olotu to call a meeting of stakeholders in a view to be more proactive in addressing the issue.

The Governor said when the government came out with the regulation, there would definitely be an end to the herdsmen-farmers’ clashes.

Some of the stakeholders in attendance at the meeting, included the police, military, Directorate of State Security, Fulani settlers, herdsmen, farmers, state government functionaries, and traditional rulers.

Represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Agriculture, Mr. Akin Olotu, the governor explained that the government had no plan to either ban grazing or restrict anyone from farming but there must be regulation to the activities of the herdsmen in order to promote peaceful co-existence.
