Saudi Arabia, a country with strict sharia laws, has lifted a ban that restricts women from watching football.

For the first time, the Saudi Arabian Government allowed their women to enter into a sports stadium on Friday, the 12th of January 2018 to watch a soccer match that was played between two local teams.

Although a strict rule is still in place as they were still segregated from the male crowd, the women, however, were assigned to different seating positions in the family section, away from the men but were still able to enjoy the friendly game.

This social reform was made in a bid to give women liberty, and a step in the ongoing modernisation of the nation.

There were separate entrances and parking lots for the female spectators as well as well-fitted special female restrooms.

A 32-year-old football fan from Jeddah, Lamya Khaled Nasser stated she was proud to be a part of this change.

“This event proves that we are heading for a prosperous future. I am very proud to be a witness of this massive change,”. She said:
