If she earns $8 per hour

#8 * #365 = #2920 per hour

If she works for 10 hours daily

2920 * 10 = #29,200 daily

If she works for 25 days

#29,200 * 25 = #730,000

Another mugu who doesn't know 70% of Americans who earn $55,000 annually can't even come up with a mere $500 in emergency while 62% of Americans are one paycheck away from living on the street. So good to know you make your money in America and pay your bills in Nigerian with naira. Mumu

I smiled when I read your post. You are converting to Naira. So, someone living in America is paying for his/her expenses in Naira? That $8 is just a dollar above minimum wage. It's what a 16 yr old working in MacDonald or Wal-Mart will earn. Now imagine if you have family.

From the calculation I can help break down expenses.
730k is like 1800 usd monthly that's if she doesn't miss a day.

Rent average depending on area a bedroom can cost up to 650 -820 usd depending on location.

If you have a car gas monthly is average of 35 usd weekly.

Phone bill 40 usd if using metro line, but with Sprint it might be cheaper

Electricity fluctuates your bill can rise up to 250 usd during this mad cold cos u need heater if u don't want village people to sing he was once a good fellow for you.

Internet is extremely cheap so one can be on 10 usd unlimited monthly if using xinfinity platform.

Water rate 80 usd monthly .

With 1800 earned per month you would spend at least 1300 on utilities.

But rather than discourage people encourage them to get their papers right and have a plan, US is not for the faint hearted , everything works from light to good roads , public schools are fantastic for the kids till they enter college.
Once one has a plan in place in the US the Sky is the limit..
If one works hard and most importantly be prayerful , if you survive naija forget you would survive anywhere just know your limits and expectations.

Good points.

You didn't remind them that their conversion is BEFORE TAX . Many people think those money they are fast at converting is what you earn directly like its done in naija. After tax the person might end up earning Just around $1600.
Tax varies on number of dependants.
About the gas, its also the function of the distance between your place of residence to where you're working in addition to your vehicle fuel consumption rate. I've seen people drive more than 20 miles daily to work just to earn 11 dollars before tax. I had someone who spends well above that your figure on gas.
Car insurance not included on your list.
A single room apartment is around 800 usd in some places.
Many of us also think the kind of job they talk about in US is like that of naija where you'd claim you go to work but in reality only spend average of 3 hours daily dedicated to that actual work while remaining hours spent on frivolities. The kind of work that'd earn you that quoted figures above I assume are the "under the table" jobs and you work from the time you resume till you clock out. Only on break you have time to rest. Not like naija that you'd chat, do aproko in between, even take a stroll. Infact some people are reading this from their workplace in Nigeria right now. No chance or opportunity for that. It's a hard labor and when you even see people doing overtime they use all their might and strength to sustain just not to get into debt of recurrent bills and to have a paltry sum to save for their future.

That said, of course if you're focused and determined, regardless, there's hope for you and you'd do better especially if you're not lazy.

The problem with many people that complain is they thought it was going to be easy for them especially cos of the nature of Nigerian jobs they left back home (where all we do is just go to the office doing practically nothing and earn salary at the end of the month. Some would even call in sick, yet they receive their full pay at the end) . When they get to those western countries and see where the real non-stop work is, they cower and start lamenting. It gets worse when they feel tired and frustrated but can't call in sick or resume late cos the jobs are paid mostly on per-hour basis and you get paid only for the duration you worked.

The fact remains that, Its easier to be successful in Nigeria than America
your statement is true but I will not say Nigeria cause we do not have the basic things which makes it more difficult .. It is easier hustling or been successful in any African country where the basic things are there than hustling in america.

In addition to that, yankee is all about packaging. Even Akon said it. Forget kim Kardashian and Hollywood stories, the place is a glorified shithole. Many people die everyday from gun violence and God keep your health because nwokem if you get sick, e don be for you.

America is not all that as people think.

So in short, from what you said now, middle class income is poverty?

And by the way, the bolded is not true. Just to let you know.

My thoughts exactly. People live on far lower income and have kids and are comfortable, go on holidays and pay a nice sum into their pension pot. It is not easy anywhere but it is easier in countries like America as long as you don't live beyond your means. If you cannot afford a $400,000 house, don't buy it. If your can't afford the payment on the Mercedes, don't buy the it. It is as simple as that.

In countries like the US and UK, as long as you are not an illegal immigrant and you are not lazy, you will get by just fine. It is even better in the UK where you have the NHS and don't have to worry about sudden medical emergencies draining your finances.

If you work minimum wage, you take home after tax is around £1,071.97 (minimum wage is higher if you work in London and it is easy to find jobs that pays more than minimum wage). As a single person, you can get house share for about £350 - £400. Other biils (council tax, water, electricity, internet et. al) is probably around £100-£120. This is just the very basic example of earning the bare minimum and you will get by. I earned less while i was a student and still had enough to send the occasional 20k to my sisters back home.
As long as you stay in your lane and continue to work on yourself so you can get ahead, be prayerful and don't try to find shortcut (If you get caught, your life will never be the same again), you will be aight.

So, having power supply everyday all day is suffering. Having the best healthcare and security is suffering. Having a predetermined future is considered suffering abi? You know why you can talk like that? You all are not used to how normal people live. So, buying generator and providing your own power supply is enjoyment abi? Patching the roads you ply on as a private citizen is enjoyment abi? Barricading yourself in your house for fear of armed robbers is enjoyment abi? Guy, you all need to experience how NORMAL people live and i promise you your perception will change.

You are probably right. It all depend on where you belong to. There are Nigerians of different classes here. Those that belong to the top 24% American income category and those below, and those at the bottom. It all depend on how you get here and what resources you have invested. It's the reality of life. I've personally experienced the high end career and 6-figure income, and also experienced the other side in attempt to pursue life-long goals and escape "the matrix".

Lesson, don't even contemplate moving here if you do not possess skill sets that can guarantee your independence if normal job is not forthcoming. And about the sister in the video, people put stuffs in storage for several reasons. She is likely new here and does not have a clue. But in summary, the pasture is not always green on the other side. It's a normal thing. A Nigerian lady i met told me of how she came to US on holiday few years back and seeing how rosy everything looked she decided to quit her job in Nigeria and moved here. Now she has overstayed her visa, can't secure employment and stuck with baby-sitting to earn a living.
You are the only sensible person I'm gonna respond to. I said what I said because she obviously judged based on her own condition.

I for one came here with a visa lottery and I started working less than one month of my entry and a lot of people had the same experience with me.

You dont compare us with people that has stayed illegally for years.

For a long time when my personal economy was booming I had health insurance but when I had a downturn in my personal economy, and because I saw myself as very healthy and had never fall sick before i choose not to get health insurance in last few years. Gbam, last year for the first time I was hit by mere throat infection. I tried to fight it until it got to a point I was not able to swallow or talk. Long story short, i drove to one of those emergency clinics. I spent about 2hrs there where they only did CT scan for me and gave me drips. Then I was driven to Memorial Herman hospital where I spent 2 days and my system was flushed with antibiotics continuously. I was not expecting a bill beyond $1.5k.

Come see bill after mail came. Two day treatment at emergency came out to $8K plus (not joking), 2 days at the bigger hospital was $15K plus. Even Nigerian women who come here to give birth no dey pay that much. American health system is a rip off. This year I did not miss getting an health insurance.

I found a way around the $15k bill because the hospital though is profit making (makes few billions yearly) also receive federal funding and because of that they are obliged to provide limited number of services free. I was well informed and submitted an application and the bill was written off.

For the $8k bill, those one are "thief". I requested that they send me itemized outline of the charges but they never did. So I am dragging it with them. Even if you are making tons of money here the system is designed to enslave you financially.

Difference is here you get treated and face the bill later, and if you are well informed you can find a way around it. In Nigeria, you do not have that luxury, you may loose your life if your situation is worse. Which of these two options will you choose.

I understand it's not all rosy but in certain respect comparing situation in Nigeria to that in the US is like comparing death and life. I value our social and family structure except that our people are generally not productive because the elite made it that way.
