It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that ‘FIA’ singer, Davido, is the biggest pop star in Nigeria at the moment. The musician had a phenomenal 2017 and from the looks of it, 2018 will be an even more amazing year. While there is no exact science to how Davido has managed to become and remain so successful, there are a couple of lessons we can learn from the ‘Fall’ singer’s way of running his brand. Here are ten lessons O.B.O. has taught us in recent times.

10. Blow Your Own Horn

Social media is great for many things, showing off is one of them. Davido is always quick to announce any of his notable accomplishments on his social media accounts because if you don’t blow your horn, who will? In an age where news changes every minute, you owe it to yourself to let the world know what you’ve done before they move on to the next thing.

9. Outdo Yourself Consistently

Davido was able to remain relevant throughout 2017 because he was always releasing new music. While we were still digesting one of his catchphrase on the music he has put out, he would drop another. Not only was the ‘Like Dat’ singer consistent, he was consistently great. Each song was better than the last and came with a clean catchy video. With such consistency, there was no way that Davido would not sit on top of the charts.

8. Put Your Own Spin On New Trends

Whether it was hopping on the Pon pon sound wave, borrowing Small Doctor’s phrase ‘If you no get money, hide your face’ or following Olamide’s footsteps and drinking out of a syringe, Davido is here for the fads. Staying relevant has everything to do with knowing what people are talking about and figuring out how you can pull it off in a way that will make your spin the most memorable version of the trend. In the age of likes and hashtags, you are either trending or you’re not and Davido is always trending.

7. Let Nothing Stop You

2017, among other things, was a year of survival for the singer. Davido has survived the type of controversies that would send many of his peers into hiding, especially after he lost some of his close associates in rather controversial circumstances. The singer, however, has taken all his controversies in stride and proven that there is no such thing as bad publicity.

6. Never Forget Your Roots

David and his father.
You can call Davido anything you want but one thing you can’t call him is a bastard. Whether it is the fact that he calls himself O.B.O. or all the times he has performed at his father’s school, you don’t need a scientist to tell you that Davido respects his old man. While Davido does have an enviable background, he has never pretended to be from the streets like other Nigerian artistes who grew up in comfort. He knows who he is and he wears it proudly on his sleeves.

5. Always Push Yourself

To be perfectly honest, Davido does not have to work as hard as he does. He has enough resources to sit home comfortably and release new music when he gets bored. He could, but he doesn’t. Being the best version of yourself is a decision that you have to make consciously. This is a major key to opening the door of true success and O.B.O is an example of this.

4. Take Care Of Your Team

One of the many things that Davido is popular for is taking care of his team. Whether it is buying drinks for them at the club or hooking them up with brand new iPhone Xs, Davido got his boys. Taking care of your team is important because you are only a strong as the weakest member of your squad. They are the eyes behind your head and the legs that stretch to places you can’t get to. Happy team, happy you.

3. Collaboration Is The Way

Davido’s ability to stay relevant has been easy because he has not done it alone. When he’s not getting Tekno to produce a song for him, he’s hiring Teniola to write him his next jam. If there is one thing that Davido does not joke about, it is working with other talents to get his star to shine even brighter.

2. Spoil Yourself

You should own an apartment with at least 2 cars. Photo: Davido
What is the point of working so hard and making all this money if you can’t spoil yourself? Spoiling yourself every now and then is healthy because it gives you a moment to savour and reap the labour of all the handwork you’ve been doing. You may not be able to spoil yourself in a lavish manner like the ‘Ada’ singer but the one that you can do, do.

1. Say No To Beef

There is no industry that you’ll find yourself that you’ll not find conflict. It is simply impossible. However, after a while, it is important for you to let go of malice and beef. Davido has a record beef squashing year from settling his issues with Kaffy to reconciling with Chief Dele Momodu and of course, making a surprise guest appearance at Wizkid’s Homecoming concert. Davido does not have time for beef, neither should you.
