Many guys are missing the point, the visit was not historic, but significant because it allows GJ to have a one on one closed door meeting with Obama. It was not a one way street discussion, it was all about mutually beneficial interests. Anybody who think Nigeria does not need the US is not facing reality. Yar'dua if he was capable would have been invited and perhaps, attend, but the US would not pitch their tent around him, they are looking for a breath of fresh air to deal with. Hillary already criticized the Yar'dua govt and they are yet to say any damning word against a fresh govt, albeit with recycled folks.

0bama has every right to visit Nigeria, and see for himself the amount of suffering the masses were passing through.

^^And so what?. The point is that the president's legitimacy is derived from the electorate and the constitution and not from any visiting Western potentate

Well, for once the Nigerian government is being put on notice in terms of free and fair elections etc by someone whos opinion they actually respect. Someone who is one a higher standing in world affairs then they are. Obama is not just one of the 140 million Nigerians who's wishes they can afford to have no regard for at all.

He who is paying the piper will begin to dictate the tune.

There cannot be not be and there will not be any electoral reforms emanating from, or as a result of, the meeting between the Nigerian President and his American colleague.
It is up to the Nigerian electorate to ensure that subsequent elections in the country are free, fair and peaceful. That is part of good citizenship.

@Tensor777, ofcourse the votes will come from the people. However sometimes you need some outside pressure on your side. We have tried the alternative for the past 10 years or so, but we all know the story. It wont come from this meeting alone, but with a sustained effort from all including non Nigerian governments including the US, the system has more chance of being changed. The Nigerian governement cannot affort to be in US badbooks, we rely on their custom for oil.

I wonder what would have happened to the anti-aparteid movement fnon-South Africans did not put some amount of pressure on the then government. Now votes count in SA.
