Re: About 110,000 Lagosians Tested Positive To Hiv by paddylo1(m): 11:48am On Apr 20, 2010 |
Thats Good, If u can do math, its only an infection rate of 0.73% 15,000,000(Lagos current population) = 100% 110,000 = 0.73% Therefore your risk of actually having sex with someone with the disease is very low Note that in washington D.C the rate is as high as 40%(For sexually active adults) and in southern africa its much worse all the same, If in doubt, put your thing in a wrap |

Considering the population of Lagos, that is a very good number. |

Yet every night and early morning, one sees half naked young girls along some streets in Victoria Island canvassing for customers. Not only that, one also sees guys in their cars parked beside them engaging in negotiations. |
Re: About 110,000 Lagosians Tested Positive To Hiv by Katsumoto: 12:06pm On Apr 20, 2010 |
ziga: paddy_lo: Your analysis is wrong. 110,000 out of those that were tested are positive. Until you know how many were tested, you can not say acurately how bad or good the news is. May be only 200,000 people were tested but I doubt that the estimated +15 million in Lagos were tested. |

Re: About 110,000 Lagosians Tested Positive To Hiv by paddylo1(m): 12:18pm On Apr 20, 2010 |
Your analysis is wrong. Where exactly is this news, wheres the link, and who are these ppl tested? was it voluntary, was it high risk commercial workers? Isnt it illegal to release test results to the public? anyway i still think HIV infection rates in Nigeria is very low. . . . probably @2%- 4% of total population |
Re: About 110,000 Lagosians Tested Positive To Hiv by Chookym(m): 12:29pm On Apr 20, 2010 |
ziga: how can u say it is a good number. the test is still going on. mind u 1.it is just from the few that came to do the test. 2. this excludes those that knows they are already positive that wont come out again for the test since they knw their status. 3.there are so millions out there that are still afraid to do the test. 4. all those that tested positive are still sexually active ( warning) |

the situation is very grave, when i was having my IT at a general hospital in surulere,we record about 11 positive cases out of 20 patients daily |
Re: About 110,000 Lagosians Tested Positive To Hiv by paddylo1(m): 12:36pm On Apr 20, 2010 |
the situation is very grave, when i was having my IT at a general hospital in surulere,we record about 11 positive cases out of 20 patients daily Probably false positives, with outdated tests, Note that most Nigerians(males),are circumcised, and male circumcision reduces your chance of catching the disease when exposed to HIV by 90% or more in effect almost making u immune |
Re: About 110,000 Lagosians Tested Positive To Hiv by samuelk(m): 12:39pm On Apr 20, 2010 |
and where did you learn about circumcision protecting you against the virus? |

Re: About 110,000 Lagosians Tested Positive To Hiv by paddylo1(m): 12:47pm On Apr 20, 2010 |
and where did you learn about circumcision protecting you against the virus? Oh its common knowledge,by doctors and most health workers, Also the UN has done extensive research in india, and southern Africa, where the mostly uncircumcised males there are up to 10times more likely to catch it Thats why infection rates are low in west Africa, compared to South Africa The spread of heterosexual HIV/Aids in Africa could be tackled cheaply and effectively by male circumcision, according to a UN study published in the open access journal PLoS Medicine. It says that one infection could be prevented for every five to 15 operations at a cost over 10 years of between $150 and $900. Each circumcision procedure costs between $30 and $60, with neonatal circumcision costing just one-third of that. That compares with lifetime first-line treatment for the disease of more than $7,000 (£4,200) per patient, double that if second-line therapies are also employed. The report is based on findings of the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the South African Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (SACEMA). However, the report says that circumcision would not have the same impact on HIV transmission among homosexual men. http://www.mariestopes.org/Press/International/Circumcision_%60prevents_HIV¬Aids%60.aspx According to Dr. Edgar Schoen, a leading proponent of circumcision and chief of pediatrics at Kaiser-Permanente Healthcare for 24 years, the evidence that circumcision prevents HIV transmission has been solid since the late 1980s. Even Harvard medical anthropologist Daniel Halperin, Ph.D., agreed with Schoen. Three trials in which Kenyan and Ugandan men were randomly selected to receive circumcision were halted when it became clear that circumcision helped prevent transmission of HIV. This prompted the United Nations World Health Organization to announce that male circumcision should be added to the list of interventions that can help prevent HIV. Based on the study, the foreskin is susceptible to attack by HIV and often develops cracks or tears that may lead to bacterial infection such as syphilis and chancroid. These bacterial infections are very common in uncircumcised men, providing a gateway for HIV. http://trans-forumresearch.com/circumcision-to-prevent-aids/ |

@paddy_lo na wao am just hearing this for the first time oo. But it lets not feal circumcision its effective prevention oo. Its not. Abstinence is the best , followed by condom |
Re: About 110,000 Lagosians Tested Positive To Hiv by Katsumoto: 1:34pm On Apr 20, 2010 |
Chookym: I have heard of circumcision assisting the spread of aids but that is true as long as there is no bruising during or before sex. With bruising, the chances of catching HIV increases dramatically. |

God help us. How come there is no known cure for 30yrs running? or they are investing in CD manufacturing and not research on cure? |
Re: About 110,000 Lagosians Tested Positive To Hiv by Katsumoto: 2:06pm On Apr 20, 2010 |
Chookym: Making condoms should not stop a corporate body from finding a cure. Any company/individual who finds a cure first is bound to reap enormous revenues. Take a look at pfizer with Viagra. Having said that, perhaps it is more profitable to sell condoms than to find a cure since most of those in need of a cure are poor africans. |
Re: About 110,000 Lagosians Tested Positive To Hiv by Thor(m): 2:09pm On Apr 20, 2010 |
Poor Africans as you call them are responsible for spreading AIDS by being irresponsible If they could find a cure they would as that would also be a bigger money spinner. Condoms were originally intended to stop pregnancy, not AIDS. Condoms are a business in their own right, without AIDS! |
