A team of scientists led by Israeli researchers has managed to date and identify a piece of jaw. It is a jaw of a “modern man”, a Homo sapiens, dating back at least 177 000 years. This makes it the oldest fossil of Homo sapiens found outside the African continent. And this discovery, published in the journal Science, changes the knowledge that scientists have of the human species.

It has been more than fifteen years since the piece of jaw was discovered in the cave of Misliya, on the western slope of my Carmel, 12 km south of Haifa. Fifteen years as teams around the world examine the seven fossilized teeth to try to break the secret and finally achieve a major discovery.
