another perspective. Ibadan was ended in the kiriji war... ask seunmsg You mean Ibadan's military dominance over majority of Yorubaland was ended at kiriji war? Very true though. The people of Ekiti ensured that. @Y0ruba, you also accord Ibadan too much weight than rightly deserved. Other towns contributed to the osogbo victory with Ibadan as the leading force. Again, most major Yoruba towns allowed Ibadan Ajeles on the agreement that Ibadan will protect them from the marauding Fulani's who are hellbent on pushing their jihad to the hinterland of the Yoruba nation. That was why Ibadan was able to meddle in the choice of Ooni or Owa Ijesha. Ibadans influence was as a result of the need to forge a common front against the Fulani's and not as a result of ibadans military conquest of major Yoruba towns. Ekiti for example was never conquered by Ibadan in any war. Our people voluntarily invited Ibadan for protection purpose. However, when the Ibadan Ajeles started passing their boundaries, Fabunmi immediately put them in their place. Your effort to also draw a line between Oyo and Ibadan is just an ego thing. Without the old Oyo empire, there won't be Ibadan. The Ijaye war actually showed the deep relationship between Ibadan and Oyo. Ibadan fought that war against kurunmi on behalf of Oyo. Finally, Alafin never plotted with Ekiti people to bring down Ibadan. Fabunmi started the war basically to free Ekiti from the excesses of the Ajeles and nothing else. Alliances were formed as the war intensified but we never had any alliance with Alaafin. Oyo had no reason to support Ekiti so it played a neutral role. That was why Alaafin was able to convince the British governor in Lagos to intervene. An Oyo man Samuel Johnson led the peace effort by the British. Ibadan was close to routing Fabunmi & Ogedengbe’s forces until, apart from the rocky terrain providing cover, returnee Ijesa slaves began supplying them with automatic rifles and these same returnee slaves enlisted as snipers.
They were firing bullets that went through more than one person’s body. One shot, multiple kills.
The battle ended at a stalemate, Ibadan could not advance & Ekiti could not dislodge Ibadan. Ibadan was never close to routing the Ekitiparapo army at any point. In fact, Ibadan were quick to accept peace since defeat was imminent. Ekiti fought that war for freedom and that freedom was achieved. Ibadan fought the war to maintain their influence on Ekiti and Ijesha and they couldn't achieve their aim. So, the outcome should tell you who actually won and who lost. 3 Likes 1 Share |

The facts are not correct, the Ibadan people became ambitious and actually would subjugate others. The shows in their mode of operation. The tyrannical dealing with Ijesha, Egba, Ikare Vic sacking and occupation of the conquered. Areas shows an ambition rather than protection. For instance, the present location of Ibadan belonged. To Egbas, Oshogbo to Ijesha.
Again, the immediate and remote causes. of Ekiti parapo war were a revolt against. Oppressors . The OP shold read without bias the History of Yorubas by Rev. Johnson carefully edited by his brother, Dr, . Johnson, an erudite scholar, and one of the few in his generation. 1 Like 1 Share |

Indeed it asking Afonja to attack Ife was extremely sacrilegious. These kings go to Ife to receive concecrated Oranmiyan’s sword with which they swear never to attack Ife & upon doing so, disaster should befall them. Yet, Mr. Aola wanted Afonja to sack Apomu an Ife town/market which Afonja knew was a taboo & refused. This same attitude is what Adeyemi III was and is still holding towards Ife but he knew better by not coming to personally do the ritual of the sword during his coronation decades ago.
Maybe the writers were telling their story through Oyo’s lenses, it was very dishonest to have tucked Ibadan under Oyo and appropriated Ibadan’s mighty achievements for the Alaafin when in actual fact, the Alaafin was Olubadan’s colleague and plotted with Ibadan’s enemies - Ilorin and Ekiti at that time to crush Ibadan.
Oyo & Alaafin were spectators, a very passive one who played backyard intrigues against Ibadan. There’s nothing more from Oyo’s lenses no matter what sources they try to employ.

That was why Alaafin was able to convince the British governor in Lagos to intervene. An Oyo man Samuel Johnson led the peace effort by the British. If Alaafin had truly plotted with the Ekitis as you alleged, the peace effort wouldn't have been successful. I don’t know how many sources you’ve read but if it is just Samuel Johnson’s work then you need to read several other works and especially, CMS reports and journals of European explorers who paricipated and witnessed the war. I’ll take the emboldened one after the other. 1. Osogbo was damn near taken by Fulani until the Ataoja at that time pleaded for support from Ibadan. Ibadan arrived, encamped and attacked the Fulani. You may want to list what other Yoruba towns contributed to the force and provide sources as well. 2. Your interpretation is wrong. You obviously do not know how Ibadan operated. Ibadan has been planting Ajeles way before Fulani problems. Their need for planting Ajele stemmed from each of civil and and military chiefs from Baale or Balogun to the variations of Seriki and Sarumi needed wealth to fund their lifestyle and status, hence, each chief took up or sponsored expeditions to this effect. A successful expedition means the leading chief or sponsor plants his own slave there as Ajele for periodic tribute. It was purely economic and had nothing to do with Fulani. 3. Ibadan was able to meddle in Ilesa affairs not because of planted Ajele but because Ijesa army was conquered. There was an account of Ajayi Ogboriefon I think or Latoosa’s son making way through the forest and emerging at the back of Ilesa’s war camp, he killed all of their chiefs on the spot and numerous Ijesa soldiers. They fell under Ibadan’s thumb right there and then. As for Ife, they meddled because the present Ooni’s great grandfather fought on Latoosa’s side against the Egba/Egbado and requested to be compensated with the throne because his father, Degbin Kumbusu, who happened to be the immediate past king was a bad king and he did not want Ife to ban his line from ascending the throne. Ife protested at his enthronement but could not do much because Ibadan was powerful and Modakeke was in the backyard to do their bidding. 4. Wrong, Ibadan’s status was not because of a common front against Fulani. Ibadan’s rise to power was purely based on fashioning an empire way before the Fulani started their nonsense. Ibadan started this empire building by vanquishing Ijaye that would have checked them and took on Egba & Ijebu next, both were very powerful and rich states the Ibadan forces wanted and tried severally to get out of the way. Meanwhile, with the Fulani incursion, Yoruba towns like Ekiti were quick to take aides with Fulani army of Ilorin against Ibadan. In fact, Ekiti was held to ransom by Ilorin army which made Ibadan step in again. Ibadan’s influence stemmed from its military system of state and its conquest of other major Yoruba towns. There was no common front against Ilorin army as can be seen before Oyo Ile’s collapse and after, Ibadan only took it upon itself to get them off of Yoruba land entirely and underneath that, they didn’t want any rival power to check them and that contributed to why Ilorin was put in its place. After the Jalumi war, the Fulani army of Ilorin was badly shaken it never engaged in open confrontation with Ibadan again or ventured into Yoruba land ever again. 6. Ibadan was invited and indeed, not all of the numerous Ekiti towns were conquered but a good number of them were conquered by Ibadan. Ibadan was going as far as Ondo/Benin fringes. The fear of letting Ibadan overrun them and the benefit of unfavourable terrain to Ibadan made the Ekiti rise up. 7. There is no effort to draw any line. Ibadan fought against Kurunmi to ensure its expansion would be unchecked. Ibadan did not fight to protect Alaafin’s interest, Alaafin set both powers against each other to prevent being subsumed by both powerful sides. Ibadan only used the Alaafin’s disagreement with Kurunmi as a pretext. 8. Without Oyo empire, there was Ibadan. Post Egba Ibadan was founded by Ife, Ijebu, Egba and few Oyo. The system in operation till now was started by the elements from the 3 aforementioned groups. It had nothing to do with empire, Ibadan was its own empire. 9. Read Samuel Johnson’s work, specifically the part where the British mediated. The Ekitiparapo and Ijesa received new ammunitions that halted Ibadan’s progress and was shattering Ibadan’s force with dialy multiple deaths. A development to which Ibadan had no response and had to rely on hand combat and flying into gunfire armed with machetes because they had run out of ammunition because od Egba and Ijebu’s blockades. Ibadan wanted to sue for peace, British sent envoy to Alaafin, upon Alaafin seeing Ibadan was being decimated sent an Ilari called ‘Oba Kosetan’ meaning Oba was not ready while Ibadan was getting decimated day by day. The Alaafin at that time gave a tacit support to Ilorin to raid Ibadan farms and force their hand off Offa. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Those who captured him during battle were his comrades. 2. He was an Ogboni like others in Ibadan camp. 3. There was a conspiracy amongst Ibadan chiefs to teach Aare Latoosa a lesson which made them stall and refused to win the war quickly; a mistake they would later regret. It was Ijesa returnee educated slaves who lived in Lagos who sent Ekitiparapo automated riles that disoriented Ibadan and stopped their advance. There were Yoruba African-American snipers in Ekitiparapo camp who were taking people out from a distance. Ekiti/Ijesa got new deadly weapons and played politics to have Ibadan blockaded on all sides - Egba, Ijebu & then Ife with Derin Ologbenla (present Ooni’s great uncle) being the Ooni who doubled as Bale Oke Igbo that controlled trade route to Benin; of course Ekiti had Ife’s support againt Modakeke, thus, that toute was blocked too and Ibadan could not get weapons. Ekiti was firing automated rifles, Ibadan had muskets with no gun powder. Ibadan was close to getting truckloads of these snipers, most of the chiefs sold their household to slavers but could not get massive quantity needed. The few of these snipers Ibadan could gather did Ekiti so much damage that they could not come out in the open to shoot like they used to. They both began hiding. Militarily, Ibadan has fought more wars and had more experience. Ekiti was new to the business and this is reflected in Ogedengbe their leader getting captured. Also, Ibadan was fighting Ekiti on Ekiti’s home ground. Ibadan was on the offensive while Ekiti was playing defense. With acquisition of modern guns, Ekiti could not dislodge Ibadan from their (Ekiti’s) own lands. Ibadan acquired only few of the guns Ekiti had in excess and was able to helm Ekiti in. Hence, it was a stalemate. If Ibadan was able to win Egba or Ijebu or Ife over to get more supplies of these gun, there would have been a total massacre of Ekiti country, be thankful this wasn’t the case. True.
It was a mess, Oyo-Ile’s central role in sustain cohesion was lost and we were all grappling with balance of power. Interestingly, we fused back as one again like we used to be when we began our struggle against British, this continued till independence until Ladoke Akintola started another gbege with help from Hausa/Fulani again. Yeah. Thankfully we did ![cheesy](https://www.nairaland.com/faces/cheesy.png) 3 Likes |

I agree with you.
The rise and decline of empires is the only constant in history and oyo empire like the Greek, Akkadian, Roman Songhai, Mali, Benin all experienced it. Oyo empire started her decline in the 18th century with the sacrilegious act by Alaafin Aole and Afonja seized the opportunity of the ensuing chaos, civil wars etc to assert his independence which resulted in the loss of Ilorin.
Ibadan rose up to the occasion when oyo was a shadow of its former self and pushed back the invading forces restricting them to Ilorin probably because the Afonja family were already estranged from mainstream yoruba. Also, by this time, European incursion into the western Sudan was in full swing and the feudal rulers they met have remained in place.
The writers are telling their own story through the lens of Oyo-Ile. It's interesting nonetheless ![grin](https://www.nairaland.com/faces/grin.png) 2 Likes

Y0ruba:
True Ibadan was increasing in might in the centuries before the Europeans entered the western Sudan but it wasn't one of the original big 7. When exactly was Ibadan founded? |

Hope you will show the same understanding when Allah is written to command his followers to embark on jihad, kill infidels who refuse to convert, take over their fields, enslave those who refuse to convert and establish caliphates on conquered lands to create new Muslim lands Allah is dubious, hiding behind Yaweh. The understanding is simple: Then, God was their political director, Saviour and sociological strategist. With time, he gave them kings and devolved some of His roles to them. Because they were His and served Him, He judged the heathen by them. He judged Israel also by the heathen Because they defaulted by sins. But Allah makes none holy and therefore lacks the primary credential to punish evildoers. But Yaweh/Christ purifies the repentant. He has also reserved the last judgment for those who will never repent. |

The battle ended at a stalemate, Ibadan could not advance & Ekiti could not dislodge Ibadan.
lmaosss did u say sniper? una wan turn this forum to comedy relief centre..Afonjar and their stale-propagandas. |
