A LESSON on HUMILITY to learn from the story of BODE THOMAS!

Bode Thomas, yes, the same Bode Thomas, whom the Surulere street was named after, died on Nov 23, 1953 in a most mysterious manner.

Bode Thomas was born to a wealthy trader, John thomas in 1918.
Himself, FRA Williams and Remi Fani-Kayode (Father of Femi Fani-Kayode) attended Law School in London, and they established the first law firm in Nigeria, called "Thomas, Williams and Kayode".
The law firm was established in Jankara, Lagos.

Bode Thomas was an excellent lawyer, but he was also very arrogant.
Because of his education, he was made chairman of the Oyo Divisional Council at one time, while the King of Oyo, Alaafin Adeyemi, (the father of the current Alaafin) was a mere member.

On Bode Thomas' first appearance in council after being appointed chairman, all council members stood up for him in deference, to welcome him, except Oba Adeyemi, who, for cultural reasons, should not show deference to anyone in public, not even his mother.

Bode Thomas rudely shouted at the King". WHY WERE YOU SITTING WHEN I WALKED IN? YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO SHOW RESPECT?" At that time, Bode Thomas was 34 years, while the Alaafin was in his 60's.
The Alaafin felt very insulted. He said "SE EMI LO NGBO MO BAUN?" (Is it me that you are barking at like that?)
Bode Thomas responded by shouting some English sentences which the Alaafin didnt understand, so the Alaafin just told him. "MA GBO LO"!
(continue barking). The confrontation happened on November 22nd, 1953. Bode Thomas got home and started barking.

He barked and barked and barked like a dog all night until he died in the early morning of November 23rd, 1953.
Bode Thomas was the Balogun of Oyo.
So, when next you drive on BODE THOMAS STREET in SURULERE, LAGOS, remember that man, who cut his own life short because of his arrogance and naughtiness.
Friends, pride comes before destruction, Humility will take you to high places. No matter what!

Do have a lovely day. Be humble.

let's educate people

You're a terrible liar.

You have failed to fact check your story before publishing it,and that's the pitfall into which you have fallen.

Now let's see who has the correct version of the story. First be informed that there was a political rivalry or animosity between the government of the day led by Awo and the powerful elites of Oyo(egged on by Oba Adeniran). This rivalry manifested itself in high offices and political patronage . Late Awolowo in his book (I can't remember the title)gave a vivid explanation of the faceoff between Alafin and Bode Thomas and ended up vindicating Bode Thomas for his calm disposition and humility. The Alaafin was queried by the Council for what was described as an uncivilised show of power, for his arrogance if you care to reason. Another verifiable source of my story came from an Old man who was there when it all happened. That event trended so much at that time.

So where did you dig your story from?

That same year ,in order to further HUMILIATE & BELITTLE the person of Bode Thomas ,the Alaafin's son ,AREMO contracted a small group of thugs(Emphasis on personal thugs),to attack Bode Thomas with black magic(The Aremo had vowed to deal with him thoroughly ). So ,who was arrogant and driven by power ? It is a curse that an average Yoruba doesn't know what humility is all about. Even you have shown nothing but a HYPOCRITICAL HUMILITY .

It was confirmed that those thugs fixed the black magic on Bode Thomas and that led to his death afterward. The Aremo too was to die or be killed in a mysterious circumstance that is open to guesses. That's what gave Oba Lamidi of today the opportunity to mount the throne as Alaafin. Aremo was his elder brother and heir apparent.

So what happened to Oba Adeniran?

He was deposed and exiled to Lagos where he died .

Body Thomas was a great loss to us.

It was a typical tussle for power. Our people chose democracy not monarchy. Bode Thomas led the charge to democratize Oyo division. The council limited the powers of the Alaffin of Oyo. It happens every where democracy is trying to stand.
