INSURANCE PROTECTS, DON'T BECOME A VICTIM OVER DARE I SAY LACK OF KNOWLEDGE.

We live in country where a N20 million super car is insured with third party motor insurance cover. Scale it up to businesses, similar trend, the general lack of identification and management of business risks, seriously dangerous. One reason why this is?, product or service commercialisation trumps all other business challenges.

In effect, insurance is a safeguard, and when combined with prevention, you guarantee your peace of mind, financial and business continuity no matter how bad the event or crises evolved in the future.

LET ME CLASSIFY WHAT I MEAN

That building that occupies your business space whether owned or rented, get it insured against loss or damage by fire, burglary, theft and extreme events.

That plant & machinery you recently aquired from China, get it insured with a good Machinery Breakdown cover.

Are you a new distributor in Lagos, ensure you acquire a Goods in Transit cover for every trip, if you would be using a third party, ensure their services is insured. As you know, accidents and stolen goods may make the news, but you wouldn't wish it on yourself.

You have just come full circle in your trading career, and you may have recently extended your warehouse size. Please get the Building and the contents covered as soon as possible against fire or theft.

How about a business owner that may not be aware that cash in the safe including employees should be insured against theft, fraud and embezzlement.

Are you one of those Nigerian that has prioritiesed insurance as a must buy, for quick claims settlement, always declare the true value of the insured assets truthfully. In addition, read and understand your policy or get your advisor to clarify fully.

WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

Nigeria is a highly unstable nation politically, economically and socially. To give the above some context, Nigeria continues to score lowly on the UN Global Human development, Economic and Peace Index from 2000 till date. Imagine scoring low on global peace and corruption perception index consistently and then scoring high in global terrorism index consistently, essentially the protection of your life and properties is still questionable as we know it today. In order words, key into the protection and peace of mind that insurance provides personally to you and your setup. Pay no mind to the usual objections regarding insurance in Nigeria.

Consider this out of the box reason why you should guard whats yours using the example of the oldest profession called, Management. In a recent speech by Professor Olukunle Iyanda, the President of Nigeria Institute of Management (Chartered). Listen to this;
"We cannot practice management tomorrow if we don’t understand management today. This is because management tomorrow is already here today.
“Our ability to excel in management tomorrow is based on our knowledge of management yesterday and practice of management today.”

So there you go, business owners and individuals with high net worth assets and Nigerians at large, embrace insurance. smiley

Need more information? I guess you do. Send me an email then.

I learnt the benefits of comprehensive insurance in a very harsh way.

I used to think there is no need for me to insure my car comprehensively, since the current market value of my 04 accord is less than 1m, until last year October when I crashed into a parked 07 corolla and Lexus ES350.

I had to cough out 1m to settle the owner of the 04 corolla withing 1 week, spent 125k to fix the Lexus (owner was kind enough to contribute 40k of the repair bill) and 320k to fix my car.

The 07 corolla was damaged beyond repair and I had to sell it as is for 350k.

I informed the insurance company where i took the mandatory 3rd party insurance, i submitted incident report and repair estimate of 1.2m for the 2 cars. The investigation was concluded withing 2 weeks and they agreed to pay 732k.

It took 3 months of rigorous follow up before i get paid.

Would the case have been different if i had comprehensive insurance? YES!

1. I wouldn't have been under pressure to pay the 3rd party withing 1 week.

2. The amount sepnt to repair my car would have been paid my my insurance company.

3. I wouldn't have wasted so much energy to pursue claims. I had to visit the insurance company's office on a weekly basis for 3 months before i got paid. It would have been worse if i reside outside Lagos.

I have insured my 2 cars comprehensively with Mansard after that incident and i also advise my folks to do the same. If you can afford a car, you must be able to afford comprehensive insurance.

Just last week, on my way from Ibadan to Lagos, a 2012 Hyundai Accent had its tyre burst on Ibadan Lagos expressway and crashed into the culvet. I was among the people that parked to smypathize with the owner and I asked whether he had insurance, he had only 3rd party.

The summary of my epistle is: if you can afford a car, you should insure your car comprehensively.

Thanks for the kind words chief Gazzuzz. I believe in the principles of fairness cos i know im at fault.

Im the person that bidded 1950 for the 09 corrolla you advertized last year November but we couldn't agree on the price. Had to settle for a 09 accord and you recently fixed the AC of the car last month. The AC is working very fine and I'll bring it for checkups as requested.

^^^
undecided

This is why insurance companies have a (well deserved in my opinion) reputation as shysters. Why the 3 month delay?

Interesting but Gazzuzz, why should you charge 981k just to fix one car? grin grin grin Insurance pays but there are many companies that will pay promptly and Axamansard is one of them. I also like the way their claims settlement unit works, they know their onions. Those who take their cars to big garages are ready to defraud the insurance companies because after the obnoxious quotes have been approved, the owners tow the cars to Ladipo to fix it by themselves and make more money. I believe these garages should be excluded because they are the ones that encourage fraud in the system.

It was Stallion Motors that charged 981k to fix the car. The car was probably bought from and serviced by them, so it's natural they fix it after the incidence.

OK, I understand now. But is there not any solution to expensive car repairs involving insured cars?

axamansard:

The excess clause applies because we are paying, he allowed the liable third-party go free.
So if I got you correctly, he should have held on to the other driver?

What if the third-party agrees to pay? Would the excess clause still apply?
