Documentary photographer, Damilola Onafuwa has released artworks promoting the value of Albinism in Nigeria with the use of photographs of albinos in Nigeria. Onafuwa used the images to address some social issues and beliefs relating to albinism in Africa’s most populous black nation. He tagged his photo series as, ‘Angel among men’, to disseminate the innocence of albinos and the maltreatment they face for having a different skin from most. According to ‘The Albino Foundation’, the rate of albinism in Nigeria is ranked amongst the highest in the world — with an estimated figure of over two million people. This makes them one of the largest vulnerable groups in the country today. The series seeks to debunk the myths associated with albinism, as well as celebrate the Nigerians who have, in spite of the negativity associated with the colour of their skin, lived above it all and made a life for themselves.
