Many businesses simply place a sign at the door to indicate closure for the day.

According to Economist Intelligence Unit’s Safe Cities Index for 2017, Singapore ranks the second safest city in the world, just behind Tokyo the Japanese capital.

In 2016, the island country’s police recorded 135 total days without any reported crimes including snatch-theft, house break-ins and robbery.

According to CNBC , the low crime rate means many small businesses enjoy little concern about shoplifting or burglary.

In fact, many local businesses take few precautions when closing shop at night.
For instance, in a certain business district, many ground shops don’t have windows, locks — or even doors.

A Starbucks located in Raffles Place, one of Singapore’s busiest underground train stations has no formal doors. Rather, a small rope when tied across the door, indicates when the store is closed with displayed merchandise still intact.

However, surveillance is highly prevalent with about 100,000 cctv street installations in the city-state, which has a population of about 5.5 million people.
