Marvel Cinematic Universe's latest offering, Black Panther, has drawn plenty of praise for its use of actual African cultures. From the lip plates of the Surma and Mursi tribes of Ethiopia, to the head dress of the Zulu tribe of South Africa, to the Basotho blankets of the Lesotho people, the movie explored various spheres of African tradition. One of the less obvious ones used was Nsibidi, an ancient language indigenous to what is currently Southeastern Nigeria. Nsibidi is a centuries-old Nigerian language that used symbols instead of words or sounds. While Nsibidi does appear in some parts of the film — like the pillars of T'Challa's throne room — the main written language is an evolved version created by the movie's production designer, Hannah Beachler. Calm down. Nchibi (Nsibidi) is first and foremost an Ejagham invention. They taught their neighbors. Efiks, Ibibiios and Igbos. 1 Like |
