sacluxisback: Do you care to read? An 'Illiterate Aboki ' wrote this: Dear Lunkhead, It is still a very valid point of argument that you lack a proper understanding of when and how to use the word " School'. Kindly take note of the following points : 1. The word ' school ' is not a verb . It is grammatically wrong to say : I SCHOOLED in Harvard. From whom did you learn that 'school ' is a verb in this context? SMH 2. The word 'school' applies basically as the COLLECTIVE for FISH when it is understood that they swim together. That's why you could say : A SCHOOL OF FISH. Got this? When & How To Verbalise the word "SCHOOL". Gerunds come to mind. When you add 'ing' to a verb it does not merely become a noun except when properly used to do what nouns do. ING. 1. SCHOOLING the new horses is time consuming ( How does this sound? Incorrect? Hell no ! It is absolutely correct. The word 'school ' is used as a noun by adding 'ing'. So avoid this pitfall! 2. I SCHOOLED myself to be compassionate. ( I have deliberately used the word 'school ' as a verb to mean that I taught myself the virtue of compassion) Education is in a state of infirmity in this country. |

lucreziaborgia:Nigerians are taught British English actually. It's not a 'strange' accent. It's also interesting to hear that we speak people's language better than them. |

WORLDPEACE: Question is English was taken to various corners of the world. From there people developed own unique versions. Americans, Australians, NZlers, South Africans, Caribbeans, etc. They now own their own versions of English. It is we Africans whose versions are still considered inferior. Primarily because we ourselves consider it inferior. Nelson Mandela once addressed this issue. He said their many "Englishes". I have long advocated for pidgin to be made official language alongside English. So how 9ja music has exploded since our young singers became confident rapping in local languages & pidgin compared to the days of Alex "O" trying to be like Michael Jackson. |

AreaFada2: Nigerian English is not standardized. You can't teach people something that is not in the curriculum. Stop confusing our children. |

A whole book is coming out soon on this topic and the whole fraud called education. This is one of the worst possible thing that could happen to a mind. Indeed, an earlier article on my signature predicted that in future we would become more British than British people, unless we re-invent what we call education. This is the saddest thing I've ever read on Nairaland. |

delivryboy:Me and you are not talking about the same thing. When you learned oral English in secondary school, all the pronunciation you learned was based on British or American English, not Nigerian. Whatever reason your parents had for making you learn it is the headache of you and your parents. If your parents paid your fees because they were inferior, that's your own problem. Mine paid because they wanted me to learn the language well. |

“You hear some parents bragging that their children can speak in British accent, to them, education is complete''. Yes, indeed, when you begin speaking in British accent your education (indoctrination) is complete!!. |

jhubril: The parents are not happy their children are speaking proper grammar, they are happy that the children are speaking with a British accent. A British accent has no bearing on being understood by other people of the world. There are illiterates with British accents with no idea of what proper grammar is so those are 2 different things entirely. You are going off on me because of grammar when I was particular about accent and imagine you proved yourself by pointing out what you think is bad grammar, is that logical to you? |
