The Sokoto State Police Command said it has arrested a syndicate that specialises in forging the National Identity Card.

Parading the suspects at the police command headquarters on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Cordelia Nwawe, said the suspects were arrested in connection with offences of criminal conspiracy, abetting and forgery.

The suspects are: Mudassiru Taofeeq, Perez Percy, Abdussamad Lawal, Shittu Isiaka and Priscilla Kuhwa, who are all of an unnamed business centre on Ahmadu Bello Way, Sokoto town.

According to the police spokesperson, the suspects were alleged to have demanded and procured a forged national identity card at a cost of N4,000, with which they opened a bank account alongside with a passport photograph for one Nasiru Sifawa of the Bodinga Local Government Area.

Nwawe said, “The bubble however burst when Nasiru Sifawa ignorantly took the forged slip to the National Identity Management Commission office in Bodinga with the aim of collecting the main national identity card.

“Upon discovery that the slip was forged, the NIMC head office in Sokoto was alerted and police were informed.”

One of the suspects, Percy, later led the police to his accomplices and owners of the business centre. Also, another suspect, Lawal confessed to have been printing the NIMC slips and cards for a couple of years to Perez, but he claimed not to know Taofeeq.

Lawal, alongside his two accomplices, was being quizzed by the police.

Also paraded were five robbery suspects – Muhammad Zarru, Usman Abdullahi, Mohammed Bello, Audu Gamde Kwai and Abdullahi Abubakar.

They were arrested for allegedly robbing five persons who were travelling from Niger Republic to Sokoto State.

The names of the victims were given as Shehu Muhammed, Nasiru Abdullahi Usman, Yusuf Adamu and Hadiza Muhammad.

The victims were said to have been robbed by the bandits near Boto village in the Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto.
