Not really a good idea. Yoruba language is now prerequisite for admission into Lagos State owned tertiary institution. So someone not from Yoruba State is not expected to take Yoruba language in waec. So in the case he chooses LASU or any other State higher institution of learning, that make him/her automatically disqualified.

Bose ma je niyen or use the closest lagoon

The Unversities in Lagos are been funded with Yoruba tax, get that straight into your medulla.

A good move to divide the country easily.
If every state and region can keep their resources to themselves. Ambode knows the united Nigeria is fake.

It means you cannot study in Lagos owned institutions if you don't have minimum of Credit in Yoruba language.

I encourage other states especially in the Niger delta to do the same, but this time let pri 1 to 6 be in native language and An excellent grade in the native language should be required for employment

The law has its pros and cons

Yes, culture will be prolonged, preserved and encouraged. I see a whole lot of sense

But then, they aren't gonna study the whole of their course years in Yoruba? So why the law?

It is unfair for someone with straight As to be denied admission because he failed Yoruba and while someone who has mixtures of Cs and Ds to be admitted because he passed

As long as the language is not what will be used throughout the course years, then the law should be reviewed

Anyway, I no dey go back school sef. And even if I wanted to, Na LASU I go apply for? grin grin

Straight A's are useless without Yoruba. Great development. The language will not go extinct.

Did it occur to you that one could cheat just to pass Yoruba and then get the admission?

As long as Yoruba will not be the language used to teach them, then it will be virtually useless.

Anyway, watch how people will get straight As in Yoruba even though they don't know shii there

My chest. Stop making a mockery of the law abeg

It's a good development anyway. That's why I'm hustling hard so my kids won't have to attend tertiary institutions where cultural heritage is put before brilliance and intelligence

You don't need to force your language on anyone. Speak and take the language all through activities of your state, like in the market, and see how it will develop. The policy won't make pple learn Yoruba.

Chidi's chuka's ngozi's are already learning Yoruba language with all fervour and are already disowning their Igbo heritage and embracing the Yoruba culture

You no know Aboki again, i'll love to see it implemented, Hausa/Fulani & Igbo dominate all the markets in Lagos wetin concern them with waec subjects, so Ambode should put foward a Yoruba market bill, if not all this effort was useless

as important as preserving a language is, it should be done with a sense of inclusion for other people from other tribes.

lagos is a supposedly cosmopolitan city/state & a mega one at that, introducing this kind of all encompassing law is not too palatable.

it could be done in such a way that having a credit in the language would be compulsory for indigenes of lagos or those from Yoruba speaking states. this already will ensure that the language is preserved amongst those who need it most.

what would happen if every state or local government starts the same thing? so if you can't speak the ekiti dialect, that means you can't school in state schools in Ekiti or if you don't speak Bini then you can't school in state schools in Edo (a state which has numerous dialects).

what happens if there is a student foreign exchange programme between lasu & say... Harvard? will the Harvard student be turned down because he doesn't have a Yoruba background?

if Nigeria breaks up, then the language law will be fine & fully justified since most of the people will be homogenous to the area, but as long as Nigeria remains Nigeria, it is best we thread carefully.

p.s.

its almost similar to Hon. Kazaure's position that the role of women in politics should be curtailed. the fact that history & tradition has always relegated women to the background does not mean it should become a law & it is the same way sane Nigerians worried about the attempt to forcefully make sharia applicable to non-muslims in 2000...

besides, the Yoruba race is too large to be worried about its language going extinct anytime soon (same for Igbo & Hausa).
