Antonio Conte was forced to defend one of his key players after beating Crystal Palace.

Chelsea's classy first half display was enough to see them through against Roy Hodgson's side, despite a late scare.

Patrick van Aanholt's late goal put pressure on Conte's side, who came through to put their two recent defeats behind them.

But Chelsea are struggling in front of goal at present.

Summer signing Alvaro Morata has failed to continue his solid form from the opening weeks of the season.

But Conte was left defending his other striking option, Olivier Giroud at full-time.

"I think Olivier was unlucky," he said.

"Two clear chances to score, he hit the post and another was a deflection by the defender, but his commitment was good for the team and we have to continue in this way.

"But the Blues boss did admit his side scuppered a host of chances to kill the game off.

"We tried to finish the game, but I think that their goalkeeper made good saves and we hit the post," he added.

"For sure when you have so many chances it is important to be clinical, but we must be pleased with the performance of the team and prepare For Barcelona."
