An Assistant Editor, ideally with one year of experience in publishing, is necessary to support the editorial Division’s acquisitions program undertaken by independent acquisitions editors, supporting authors, guiding manuscripts to delivery, drawing up contracts, communicating with staff and Delegates, and helping the Division to hit sales projections for the FY as well as acquisitions targets.

Headquarters/Office Location: Ibadan, Nigeria

Job Responsibilities:

The Assistant Editor is involved in virtually every aspect of the editorial process, from screening submissions, to taking delivery of manuscripts, to dealing with authors and colleagues in production, marketing, and publicity.
• Organize, screen, and assist in evaluating proposals and manuscripts under consideration; contact and coordinate outside reviewers of material; acknowledge, thank, and pay outside reviewers.
• Assist in preparing proposals for approval at publishing committee meetings; prepare Delegates’ Notes; prepare contracts for approved proposals; process signed contracts.
• Proactively manage titles under contract, maintaining regular contact with authors to monitor progress, offer advice, update databases, and arrange for any necessary post-contract review of materials.
• Prepare “New book announcements” – documents providing descriptions and selling points for all new titles which are used by the Marketing function.
• Assist in drafting of copy and reports on selected topics and books; perform editorial work on selected manuscripts. Assist with book cover design, permissions clearance, and solicitation of book endorsements as necessary.
• Occasional attendance at conferences and author events.
• Assist with additional publicity and marketing activities on some titles, if needed.
• Coordinate with other departments—content operations, marketing, publicity, publications, and customer service as required.

Job Requirements:
• BA/BS required
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills required
• Strong time management and organizational skills essential
• Strong background in Literature required.
• Excellent typing and computer skills (Word, Excel)
• Ability to prioritize, work independently, and manage several assignments and track multiple projects simultaneously
• Must be eager to learn, a self-starter, and detail oriented
• Experience of literary book editing desired
