I think it's because it affects the efficacy and effectiveness of the juju

It depends on the things considered abominable to the given deity that you worship. It is very relative. Some foods are excellent as offerings and as such can be consumed freely for some, while they may be abomination to others.

It does not really reduce the powers. Such foods rather, might provoke the deity against a wrong target.
