The elections are around the corner and Nigeria, 50 years on has little to show-off as an independent nation. We are still struggling with power and water, massive unemployment and widespread illiteracy. Our corrupt and uncaring politicians drop one office to pick up another without making meaningful impact in that which they leave behind and for 50 golden years nothing has changed.

Pondering on this brought an idea that would at least ensure that the excesses of our corrupt politicians get stymied. This strategy is borne out of the idea that our political class does not like being ridiculed on a global scale.
It has come to my notice (and I am sure I am not the only one) that anything that would show Nigeria in bad light (especially when it affects them directly) they vehemently fight against.  For instance, the Sony PS3 adverts, the movie District 9, the Abdulmuttalab saga and the latest being the BBC documentary on Lagos state.

My point is unabashed as they are in our own shores, they are very image conscious overseas wanting to be respected and held in high esteem. The idea is to capitalize on that.

How? I leave that open to every concerned Nigerian citizen. But in my own opinion, I recommend that we start washing our dirty linen on a global scale. This may sound unpatriotic but until someone comes up with Plan-B we should go with this.

Let us aggressively use face book, twitter and you-tube as tools for change. Come election time, let every citizen intending to vote go with gadgetry like cameras, camera phones, phones with internet support and be ready to protect our votes by taking pictures of election malpractice and uploading it with detailed description on any of the sites earlier mentioned. In fact lets inundate these sites with it- I am talking 20 000+ photos.

Staging protest (be it strikes, nude, peaceful or violent) is losing its appeal in this land and we have to find alternatives. I expect this to yield results: The Naval officer saga was successful because people used these sites effectively.

Lets protect our democracy

Best Regards
