Look for strange sounds coming from your vehicle and the steering wheel as well.
In spite of new advances, most cars in the market today still use the same hydraulic power steering system. This system of your car needs some different factors to work smoothly, including:

A good power steering pump
A good engine belt
Clear passageways
No leaks in/out of the system
Right level of proper power steering fluid

How to Test and Troubleshoot a Power Steering Pump

Sometimes, power steering pump failure occurs when you suddenly lose power steering in your car. There are certain symptoms of a malfunctioning power steering pump; hence, check them out and get the pump examined by mechanics as soon as possible.

1. Strange noises from your vehicle

Groaning noises may be the most terrible noises the pump can make. If the power steering pump continues to fail, noises will become worse and worse. Besides, a whining noise when turning your wheels is also a symptom of your bad power steering system. It might signal a leak in the pump or low fluid level which can also wreck the system.

In case power steering system breakdown is caused by the lack of power steering fluid, the whole system (steering rack and lines) can be seriously damaged, and then requires complete replacement.

Additionally, squealing noises you hear when starting the car can also be a warning of power steering pump failure. These noises, usually coming from the engine bay, can be made when you do sharp turns and most likely they may come about for one minute when you start the vehicle.

Therefore, once you notice strange noises coming from your car, look at the power steering pump and replace it if needed.

2. Stiff and unresponsive steering wheel

If you feel your steering wheel is not responsive when turning a corner, the power steering pump is probably out of order. This sometimes goes with a whining noise.
