Unemployment Situation In South East,a Ticking Time Bomb-Zinox Chairman by GoodGovernance: 9:18am On Apr 04, 2018 |
The Chairman of Zinox Group, Leo Stan Ekeh, opined that the unemployment situation in the region is a ticking time bomb, describing it as a social problem of immense ramifications which may see all-inclusive peace elude the nation, if not urgently addressed. At a 2-day convention organized by the Owerri People’s Assembly, an apex socio-cultural, the Zinox Group boss, said: “The problem of massive unemployment facing the South East region is one that requires concerted efforts from the Federal Government and other stakeholders. A situation, in which thousands of qualified graduates, most of them with upper class degrees, are still looking for their first jobs 10 or 12 years after leaving school, is highly worrisome. It is a suicidal situation; one that will potentially explode in disastrous consequences, if not immediately addressed. “If you rely on statistics, there are over a million of such unemployed graduates in the South East. Having such a huge number of active yet unengaged youths concentrated in the region is a serious cause for concern and the Federal Government has a role to play in nipping this situation in the bud,” he stated. While disclosing that a lot is being done by private individuals and entrepreneurs from the region to ameliorate the situation, Ekeh noted that this was grossly insufficient and urged the Federal Government to partner with such well-meaning Nigerians to achieve more. “What is required is a joint effort to save our youths. In reality, the State Governments cannot do it alone. Also, a number of entrepreneurs, businessmen and other well-meaning Nigerians from the region are equally doing their best but it is hardly enough. Personally, I have been quietly supporting the Imo State Government for many years in creating employment opportunities for youths in various communities in the state. These investments often exceed the sum of N1 billion yearly but it is like a drop of water in an ocean. https://www.financialdigest.com.ng/blog/2018/04/04/unemployment-situation-in-south-easta-ticking-time-bomb-zinox-chairman/ 9 Likes |

state governments in East don't know how to woo investors. just to pay salaries and commission 1km road that won't last beyond the nearest rainy season. identify mineral resources abundant in your state, travel to east asia with your team; china, Malaysia, hong kong and woo investor companies that have track record of mining those minerals. sign MOUs. now, offer them adequate land for kick off as well as state security and those your 1km roads, boom! they mine these resources, create wealth for youth and generate IGR for government. or is it that governance looks easy from the outside than it is on the inside cause i don't understand why these people can't have this simple reasoning! 49 Likes 2 Shares |

Unemployment in East is lowest in Nigeria if you can tell yourselves the fact. The number of shops in Anambra and Abia States alone can handle every unemployment challenges and the youths are hardworking and versatile as well. There are more than 20 international markets in Anambra state and more than 4 industrial clusters with artisans making great income. Igbo youths handle their challenges and they are not deep in gambling and drug abuse like the lazy and terrorists neighbors 83 Likes 7 Shares |

IMO state alone produces more university graduates per year than the north east and north west combined. Just to put things in context. The basic laws of of economics; supply and demand is playing out. The solution is continued attraction private investment into the states and Financial incentives for new graduates with entrepreneurial drive. 15 Likes 1 Share |

Besides successive governments and the older generation abandoning the Nigerian youth with sub-par education, tradition, ethos etc. The Nigerian youth is also to be blamed. Right now, keeping up with the Joneses means top of the range mobile phones, rampant drug abuse, lack of respect and compassion for neighbours -online and in flesh. Creativity is often confined to unethical industry: Online scams, Ponzi schemes, prostitution, outright stealing and exam malpractice. The government has its role but family, religious institutions and the youth must forge the right culture of creativity and hard work. 13 Likes 1 Share |

I think security and infrastructure need to be fixed before investors can consider the region. 13 Likes 2 Shares |

Unemployment in Anambra state is the lowest in Nigeria. That is a given. I think that Zinox was referring to his own Imo state where joblessness has assumed epidemic proportions because people like him don't build any factory in the state but rather more hotels to keep the prostitution industry booming there. 8 Likes |

Really?? Igbos certainly has the lowest unemployment figures in Nigeria, and that's a fact!! The average Igbo graduate who can't get a paid job is quickly absorbed into trade or travels out of the country ASAP. You can hardly see an Igbo man who is unemployed for five years without doing one of the two options above. Almost every Igbo family have members abroad and even within other African countries where a new trend is emerging whereby Igbos are taking over the supply business in many of these countries. 16 Likes 1 Share |
