Designed and invented by Adolphe A. Chaillet and manufactured by the Shelby Electric Company. This light bulb which is currently burning at the Fire station 6, Livermore California USA is over 117yrs old. It is currently hooked to an independent power source with a steady voltage of 120volts, the bulb itself is a hand-blown with carbon filament and rated approximately 4watts. The bulb has only been turned off a handful of time since its installation in 1901.
In 1972, the Guinness Book of Record declared it the world’s oldest working lightbulb, which was later researched by Ripley’s believe-it-or-not and affirmed. Although there are others of its kind also proven by competent professionals to be legit, located in different paths of the US and Europe. Few of such bulbs are the light bulb in Forth-Worth, Texas reportedly installed in September 21 1908 and another in Gasnick Supply, a New York hardware Store on Second Avenue, between 52nd and 53rd streets..Installed in 1912. The bulb protector, Steven Bunn said the secret of the lights success was down to good old-fashioned engineering. “the certainly don’t make them like this anymore, it is a real sign of how some things were better made in the past” he said regrettably.
A research by the Green Tech Naija team has revealed that a typical incandescent light bulb should stay as long as 1,000 to 2,000hrs (approximately 42 to 83days) on the average, while LED’s has a life span of about 25,000 to 50,000hrs (approximately 1,042 to 2,083days) when powered on constantly.
Obviously, by all standard of economies of scale, the type of technology used in the Centennial light bulb cannot be commercialized even though the idea of having a light bulb that never “dies” will surely be fascinating to my fellow Nigerians and some around the world. The question would remain, how do you stay in business making products with expiry date like “best before eternity” lol. Although such bulbs can be made for some special purposes.
