President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on Friday, called for unity and nation-building at the 15th Synod of the Anglican Diocese held at St. Barnabas Cathedral, Kwara State.

Represented at the event by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Hon. Gbenga Makanjuola and his Senior Legislative Aide, Mr. Oye Adetula, Saraki emphasized the need for sustained co-existence amongst adherence of various faiths, saying that Nigeria’s unity and peace was non-negotiable.

“The Christian community in Kwara State has played a vital role in sustaining the peace, unity and co-existence of our great state,” Saraki said, “Hence this has helped us as inhabitants to live and relate harmoniously even in the face of socio-economic and political challenges.

“Several times, our peace and unity has been tested but to the glory of God, we are still standing tall. It is a fact that God has not made a mistake in the architectural design of our nation Nigeria, therefore it is incumbent upon us as spiritual and political leaders to keep thanking God for His mercy and for keeping us together as a nation,” the Senate President said.

Saraki also noted that all citizens, regardless of creed or political affiliation, had a role to play in developing the state, urging the attendees at the event to continue to pray for the success of the state and the nation at large.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we all have a role to play in our nation building and it's good governance. Nigeria as a nation today is going through series of challenges; economically, socially, politically and most importantly, in areas of security of lives and property. It is on this note that I want to appeal to this gathering and it's leadership, to keep praying for Nigeria at all times.

“As a legislative arm of the federal government, our responsibilities are to make laws for the good governance of the country, hence we have strive to revamp all our laws that can energies our national development, especially in areas of economic and infrastructural development and self-sufficiency. This has been our target and focus in the last three years by making laws that basically has direct impact on the lives and wellbeing of the citizens, encourage foreign investment, strengthen our capacity base, create job opportunities and empowering small-scale entrepreneurs.”

In order to support the Synod, Hon. Makanjuola further announced the donation of N2million from the Senate President, saying that due to other important national assignments, Saraki was unable to attend the event.

The Deputy Chief of Staff also announced a personal donation of N1million of his own, stating that he was born into the Anglican church, and he was proud to be representing his principal at such a historic occasion in the church’s existence.
