The police in Badagry, Lagos State on Tuesday night, arrested a masquerade and his followers for clashing with security officials.
The News Agency of Nigeria learnt that some youths in Badagry have, however, staged a protest against the arrest.
The youths protested at the palace of the traditional ruler of Badagry, Aholu Menu Toyi 1.
They made bonfires on the roads, demanding the release of the masquerade called “Oya” and its followers numbering about 10.
The protest continued till about 1am on Wednesday.
NAN learnt that the clash occurred at about 6pm when the followers of the masquerade allegedly assaulted a policewoman in mufti.
A resident of Badagry, Mr. Adewale Segun, who witnessed the clash, told NAN that the policewoman was going to lodge a complaint at a police station when the alleged assault occurred.
Segun claimed that the policewoman fell from a commercial motorcycle and wanted to report the case to a nearby police station.
NAN learnt that the police arrested the masquerade and its followers after waiting for some time for the intervention of the traditional ruler of Badagry.
NAN also learnt that the masquerade and its followers were taken to the Area ‘E’ Police Command, FESTAC Town.
The Divisional Police Officer for Badagry, CSP Salihu Samuel, confirmed the incident, stressing that it was wrong for a masquerade and its followers to harass innocent people.
The Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Mr. Husitode Moses, did not answer telephone calls made to ask for his comments on the issue.

It is very wrong to arrest a masquerde. This is a violation of West African culture.
