It has resolved that the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and the Director General of the State Security Service (SSS), Malam Lawan Daura are “to retrieve the mace stolen by the hoodlums within 24 hours”.

This begs the question; how many maces does the Senate have? Can its sitting be said to be valid without the original mace? This might be an issue that ends up in the courts and have severe repercussions for the country as the National Assembly is an important arm of government- just like the Executive and Judiciary, it has important functions that cannot be jettisoned in a democracy.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Hon. Yusuf Lasun has led members of the lower chamber to commiserate with the Senate on today’s attack.
