Today’s drama in the Senate beggars most fictional works and is surreal to say the least.

After hoodlums and a suspended Senator reportedly stole its symbol of authority– the mace. The Senate went into an executive session before resuming plenary. It has resolved that the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and the Director General of the State Security Service (SSS), Malam Lawan Daura are “to retrieve the mace stolen by the hoodlums within 24 hours”.

This begs the question; how many maces does the Senate have? Can its sitting be said to be valid without the original mace? This might be an issue that ends up in the courts and have severe repercussions for the country as the National Assembly is an important arm of government- just like the Executive and Judiciary, it has important functions that cannot be jettisoned in a democracy.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Hon. Yusuf Lasun has led members of the lower chamber to commiserate with the Senate on today’s attack.
