Ankara is one of the favourite clothing materials for millions of Nigerians and can be said to be one fashion trend that will never go out of style. It is known all over the world for its irresistible bubbly colours and vibrant designs. However, bad Ankara fabric can spoil your whole look, i give you the most effective ways to spot good Ankara material!

Cotton: These days you can see the beautiful Ankara prints on all kinds of fabrics. Ankara clothes made of silk, jersey, satin, denim, and other materials are not at all rare. However, while these alternative fabrics can look great, the only way to get genuine Ankara is to look for 100% cotton.

Resistance: Ankara fabric with a high quality paint job displays excellent resistance. Unlike low quality materials, good Ankara won’t be scratched or damaged from accidental abrasive movements. You can test it by lightly scratching the fabric with your nail or a coin to see whether there’s a mark.

Water
:While patterned Ankara seems like a very dense fabric, it’s actually pure cotton, which is why it needs to display the qualities of cotton – namely, being able to instantly absorb water and dry equally fast. Submerge your Ankara fabric into water to check its quality!

Plain weave: Ankara material is famously durable, and the main reason for its durability is the plain weave. Plain weave is believed to be one of the toughest fabric types in the world. If you want your new Ankara outfit to last you for years, look for a plain weave as a sign of quality.

Strength: Thanks to the use of plain weave and the nature of cotton thread. Ankara fabric is famously very strong. It’s widely used not only in sewing clothes, but also in creating accessories like handbags and shoes – thanks to its ability to withstand extensive wear without tearing.

Soft touch: Despite all of its strength and resilience, Ankara material is one of the softest ones to touch. Perhaps, the easiest way to tell if you’re looking at high quality Ankara fabric is to simply touch it. You can do this test in just a few seconds! Give the Ankara fabric you plan to buy a pat. If the material is smooth and soft, can be easily crumpled and quickly restores its shape, it means that the Ankara you’re holding in your hands is top quality material and will be great to work with and wear!

@op...Thanks for the post but was expecting tips on how to know good quality Ankara at the point of purchase preferably on inspection and by touch. Surely, you don't expect the seller to allow me dip his fabric in water as a test? If you know the answer, please shed more light on this?

So you will do all of the above before buying it or what? Isn't the point not to buy fake Ankara, so why do this after purchase? Pointless thread.

My exact thoughts. What's the point of paying and taking it home only to realise you got a substandard quality?

You and all your supporters, hey! The OP mentioned them but you didn't read properly. You just skimmed through the headings. Oya lemme itemize it for you!

1. Check for the caption "excellent resistance" on the label of the fabric.

2. Scratch gently with your nail or with a coin to see if it will leave a mark.

3. Ask the seller for 100% cotton. I also expect this to be written on the label. But ask. Some sellers are honest enough.

4. Give the Ankara fabric you plan to buy a pat. If the material is smooth and soft, can be easily crumpled and quickly restores its shape, it means that the Ankara you’re holding in your hands is top quality material and blablabla.

I will also add that generally, the better the quality, the higher the price. Don't buy N1000 ankara and expect "quality" or expect it to be as durable as N12,000 ankara.

Physical tips to quality Ankara is the feel to touch,ud see how cotton a 5k fabric is to a 20k Holland is but the best way is to trust the seller!!!!
Re: 5 Ways To Spot Quality Ankara by ATTAHDYE(m): 7:13am On Apr 20, 2018
Ankara or African Wax comes in 3 basic qualities, even though the market is flooded with fakes you can start by looking at the label on the edge of the fabric.

1. Guaranteed Wax: This the highest quality ankara made from 100% cotton. Soft and gentle on the skin and hand and when you rob it between you fingers, it doesn't feel rubbery or like nylon or slide easily against itself without friction.

The print is usually fine and intricate but not bright (dyed with vat dye) or 'shouting with shine-shine'. This quality usually come in what we call hollandis.

These are the things to look out for while you're in the shop. To test if the material is 100 % cotton, burn a piece of the fabric at home, if it burns and leave ash like paper it is cotton, if it melts it's not.

2. Veritable Real Wax: This is made from 100 % cotton and has all the qualities listed earlier. The main difference is the print or dyes used. They are intricate and brighter, you can use them for a long time( but not forever like Guaranteed Wax).

Your Hitaget and several other fall into this category and are widely used because they are affordable.

3. Super Print: At the bottom is the super print, they come bright attractive color but don't last. They are cheap and made mostly from synthetic materials and equally cheap dyes. Feels like nylon, uncomfortable and fray easily.

This is the most popular Ankara for 'Owanbe' as it is very cheap. The celebrant buys and sell it for those invited for their party with a reasonable profit margin. It is meant to be wore for that party and may be two or three times again if you do not wash it before its 'death'. The cheap price enables many people to buy it hence it becomes 'aso - ebi'. Consult an Ibadan person for full detail.

For high quality Ankara, I normally go for hollandaise Vlisco or super Holland, they can last for 4 to 5yrs.
