1956: Queen Elizabeth II And Prince Philip Meet His Majesty Obi Okosi Of Onitsha The Queen of England and the Prince Consort meets the Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty Obi Okosi, in Onitsha during the British royals' tour of Nigeria in 1956. With them is the great Zik of Africa, Nnamdi Azikiwe. No other part of igbo land had such privilege because they had neither king, nor organized traditional government. 2 Likes

MelesZenawi:Those states maintained the pre colonial Igbo culture while yours copied alien monarchy that has no relationship with Igbo worldview. Chinua Achebe is an authority in Igbo customs and through his books the whole world know Igbo culture. In our government text books and in the archives or Nigeria the Igbo's are known as non-centralized ethnicity. Why not go tell the white man you have Kings? 2 Likes 1 Share |

UdechiHD is right. Ndiigbo never had kingdoms. The key feature of kingdoms is that lands belong to the king and their people were the subjects of the king, we were a land of free people and were no subjects to any one. Ndiigbo never had such. What we had were Okpala ukwus, who held Ofo and servered as representative of the people with their permission. Land in Igboland always belonged to families(Umunna) and the Okpalaukwu only represented the clan and did not dictate to them. The Obis of Nnewi were merely decorated Okpalaukwus with the Igwe of Nnewi being their leader. Igbo enwe eze and Igbo ama eze represent who our people are. 7 Likes 1 Share |

ChinenyeN: As far as Igbo is concerned. We must keep watch. Ngwa is an Igbo sub-group. Abaribe represents ndigbo well and had title of nwadiohanma ngwa. So we must keep watch over all. Igbo culture should not be descrated by mere illogical few. |

The obis in nnewi dates as far as back as the town itself, so don't drive here with your inconsequential reasoning. Till this day the igwe stands strong and high. What a useless submission. IDENNAA:Igbo Izugbe once called Isoma-Igbo has evolved overtime and would continue evolving. It is not perfect, has faults but has come to stay. Igbo Izugbe was a British experiment to ease communication barrier that impeded colonialism in the east. Bonny and Onitsha were the testing ground of Isoma-Igbo and was used to spread Christianity and colonial rule in Igboland. When next you want to question Igbo-Izugbe, maybe you'll need to visit Bishop Crowther and the likes of Oraka in their graves to question their motive. And the answer they'll give you is this: "If the Yoruba's accepted Oyo Yoruba without questioning me and the Nupe's accepted Bida Nupe without questioning me, because it helped to unite this fragmented groups into one strong ethnicity, why then should you the enemies of your Igbo tribe question my motives. Why don't you improve on what bounds you together, unite into one common goal and reach for the skies". This is for the Omanbala, Ngwa, Ika, Ndokwa and Ikwerre separatist asking the motives of Igbo Izugbe and the above is what late Bishop Crowther will tell you. 2 Likes |

Lies Igbo Izugbe was the coinage of several dialects to become what could be general igbo language. Onitsha had and still has a distinct sweet dialect that flows with ease. No wonder the colonists used it in their literature translation as a standard igbo language. Onitsha doesn't speak igbo izugbe. Onitsha has it's own sweet dialect. 1 Like

Man, you guys don't know anything. Izugbe is not Isuama. Izugbe is not Union (which combined disparate lects). Izugbe is a wholly artificial standard provided by the SPILC from the 1980s. C'mon Umu Igbo! For the sake of your Christian God. |

Abia1stboy:Yet Onitsha people allowed Isoma-Igbo to be used as testing ground in the villages. Had the Onitsha people convinced Bishop Crowther to use their dialect for central Igbo, it would have saved us a lot of stress. And my children and I and millions of other Igbos would be better of today. At least we woukd be speaking the general Onitsha dialect same way the Yoruba's now speak the Oyo dialect. But here we are today stressing ourselves learning a conglomerate of dialect called Igbo-Izugbe. So if the Onitsha people accepted the Isoma-Igbo and helped Crowther and others improve on it to what is known as Igbo-Izugbe, are we to say no to it? I'm asking you cry babies. Igbo-Izugbe same as Igbo bu Igbo has come to stay in Nigeria and future Biafra . Everything in life happens for a reason and in the case of Ndigbo it's for a positive reason. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Queen of England equally visited Oba of Benin, Sultan, Ooni as well as Obi of Onitsha when she first visited Nigeria in 1956. Obi of Onitsha represents the East, Ooni of Ife for the West, Sulta for the north and Oba of Benin for the midwest

Isuama standard was in use outside of the present Nigeria among freed slaves. The reason why Isuama took prominence among freed slaves was because the Isu group of slaves outnumbered members from other groups who had been sold into captivity. Crowther attempted to use Isuama to spread Christianity in Aboh, but found out that he could not communicate with the natives and was laughed at. He abandoned Igbo and focused on Yoruba. Onitsha was the next in line and became the first non-diaspora literary Igbo standard. 1 Like |
