Pdp Zoning Not Permanent, Says Lar by sheriffman(m): 10:35am On May 19, 2010
Remember OBJ recently made a comment concerning the issue of Zoning and some politicians called him a liar,Now Solomon Lar has his own version of things. One thing is becoming clearer and some pple ve started seeing the demerits of Zoning @ d expense of performance.pls read on.

Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) Chief Solomon Lar has said that the party's zoning arrangement as agreed at the time was not supposed to be a permanent.

The party leadership is therefore at liberty to dump it in order to consider President Goodluck Jonathan as a presidential candidate next year, if he declares interest, he argued.
Lar was a foundation member of PDPand its first national chairman. He was a member of the G-34 that metamorphosed into PDP.

The politician from Plateau State said that zoning was actually meant to pacify the Southern part of the country following years of the North occupying political leadership at the national level.
Lar made these comments when he was responding to questions from journalists at his residence, while commiserating with them over the killing of their colleagues as well as the three-year anniversary of the death of six others in 2007.

He said that when they agreed on zoning, “there was a rule that before anyone becomes President, he must deliver his ward, local government and state to the PDP." But that rule was relaxed so that former President Olusegun Obasanjo could emerge in order to achieve the purpose of zoning.

Obasanjo, at the time, had no political base. Lar said zoning has greatly stabilized the country having allowed Obasanjo to rule for eight years.

On the North, he said: “You will remember at that time, it was a military and civilian regime and leaders continue to come from one part. Shagari, Buhari, Babangida, Abacha, Abdulsalami; all from the North and the entire country was complaining and some of us in the PDP said this time around, lets give them (South) a sense of belonging."

According to Lar, “We were tempted to back Alex Ekwueme in 1999 but we said lets consider the South-west because of the election that was annulled. We said let’s be fair to the South and give them a sense of belonging as Nigerians because after the annulment of the election, there was too much complaints."

He argued that PDP could take a decision on Jonathan, saying after all, the “doctrine of necessity” was employed when the late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua was ill.
What Nigeria needs are leaders who can deliver. People should be supported based on their performances and not their ethnicity, he said.

The former PDP chairman advised Nigerians to pray for Jonathan to do well in the one year he has left to rule, instead of dragging him into the debate of whether or not he should contest elections in 2011. He added that when the time for that comes, he could make his feelings known to the public.

On political parties, he stated that funding should not be the responsibility of government and that anyone who wishes to remain registered should be prepared to take care of the financial implications.

I have said it repeatedly, the 'zoning thing' is the figment of imagination by the Political 419 North. They are trying to pacify the Yoruba's after the murder of MKO ABIOLA so that the country will not break up and they know there will be no more oil if that happens.

If North were to be in power, come 2015, they will change goal post and change party or bing in the militry. 'BORN TO RULE' has yet to leave them

I am beginning to have a strong feeling that  Jonathan is a serious contender for Next Year's Presidential Elections.
