In a plain language, a biochemist can't be allowed to work in any Government owned and standard private hospitals.


Any biochemist doing so is a quack, and the lab he his working for needs to be sanctioned by the Medical Laboratory Council.

Both courses are waste of time and money in the university, you should forget about that admission and prepare for another admission in a more better course.

Please don't be deceived with Emzor and co because those companies don't have a single Biochemist working with them.

You can Google their management online and you will see no single biochemist works their as staff

U can choose industrial chemistry. It's still better compared to biochemistry in terms of job opportunities in Nigeria.

Those that are badmouthing chemistry (wether biochemistry or Industrial chemistry), are very steep in ignorance. Chemistry is what feeds Nigeria: hydrocarbon or petroleum chemistry. From exploration to refinery and petrochemical. Without chemistry there won't be medicine, pharmacy, engineering, agriculture, etc. A Korean man has jettison chemical engineering for chemistry, becos according to him chemistry is more exciting. People have dumped medicine for history and literature, philosophy ( the great novelist, Achebe, and Prof. Kwame, a Ghanian philosopher). Both were given scholarship to study medicine, but later changed their mind to read history and literature, and philosophy. According to them, they found these courses more exciting. Chemists are great leaders: Nigeria late president Musa Yar'dua ; Angela Markel of Germany, and late Margerate Thatcher of Britain, were and are chemists. @New beginning, I think I'm in the right position to advice you.

To start with, I studied Biochemistry in one of the prestigious state university in Nigeria with a cgpa of 4.06 about three years ago and I can tell you, bch has zero job prospect as far as Nigeria is concerned..As choking and tough the course is, we are just so irrelevant in most sectors..In the pharmaceutical coy, we work as Medical Sales Rep more like a drug marketer where pharmacists give us order.

It's even worse in the health sciences, non medical discipline are not allowed to work in the hospital rather in data and records Dept..We are just useless like the p in psychology.

Though most biochemist work with Federal parastatal agencies (by connect) and some further into public health at MSc or environmental sciences, and I think the reason while we are facing this repression is due to the fact that biochemistry is nt a professional course, we are not licensed to operate in any sector.

And for ICH, though it has more job opportunities than BCH especially if venturing into environmental chemistry buh there are many multidiscipline courses in that field.

I would advise your brother to shun the two courses and shot for MBBS, Pharmacy or Radiography...Medical Radiographer are fewer in Nigeria and they are always in hot demands.

But if he has connect in Nigeria or he's financially bouyant and ready to travel out, he can go for Bch, the course is better appreciate overseas...Cheers...

You can be whatever you want to be in life if you have a mission and vision. The hospital is not the only Place biochemistry graduate can work. Breweries, food Industry, cosmetic companies, agricultural sent, soap and detergent, academic, pharmaceutical companies (pharmacist in Nigeria has hijact this scholarship becos of their limited opportunities), etc, are just some the places a biochemistry graduate can work. I know a biochemist who is working in Chevron. I was with two engineers sometime ago and they were complaining that why should biochemist/chemist be getting the jobs in the oil companies than the engineers. I am an Industrial chemist, and I have worked in a power stations as power plant chemist. In the power (steam) plant, you cannot run the plant and generate electricity without the chemist. The chemist takes care of the cooling system, manage corrosion, treat the water that is needed to produce steam that turns the turbine that is coupled to the generator which produce the electricity. The lubricating oil, transformer oil are handled by the chemist. The environmental issues are handled by the chemist. Chemicals that the plant needs to operate are tested and received by the chemist. We have two main technical professionals in the power sector : The chemist and the engineers. Most of my colligues then have background in biochemistry. This is just one of the many areas where chemist can work. I left the electricity Industry voluntarily and moved to the UK as a highly skilled migrant, and I worked in different food companies and when I got tired of England, I returned to Nigeria. Today, I am a lecturer, and the Deputy Rector of my institution. I am an Industrial chemist.

Pharmacists have hijacked the pharmaceutical Industry becos of their limited opportunities. The biochemist can also work in the agricultural sector. Dr Abel Ubeku, a biochemist, was the Managing Director of guiness Nigeria pls. A matallurgist, an Industrial chemist, was the Managing Director of Delta steel company, Alaja.
