What Islam Says About Stealing, Robbery And Armed Robbery by edimaan: 9:14am On May 09, 2018
Stealing is simply taking another person’s property without permission or legal right, for personal use.

Robbery simply means taking another person’s property unlawfully by force or threat of force.

Armed robbery is the robbery committed while the person accused is armed with a dangerous weapon.

Allah(SWT) says in the Qur’an: “O you who believe! Do not eat up your property among yourselves unjustly except it be a trade amongst you, by mutual consent….” (Quran 4:29)

In another verse, Allah(SWT) says: “And eat up not one another’s property unjustly (in any illegal way e.g. stealing, robbing, deceiving, etc.), nor give bribery to the rulers (judges before presenting your cases) that you may knowingly eat up a part of the property of others sinfully.” (Quran 2:188)

Stealing, robbery and armed robbery are grievous crimes in Islam. They attract severe punishments both in this world and in the hereafter. It is quite unfortunate today that we have many people engaging these acts. Some people engage in some of these acts in disguise. Apart from the standard stealing, robbery and armed robbery, some of the ways through which people indulge in these evil acts include the following:

1. Business owners shortchanging their employees.

2. Politicians embezzling public funds.

3. Husband subjugating and shortchanging his wife.

4. Wife subjugating and shortchanging his husband.

5. Parents subjugating, shortchanging and maltreating their house helps.

6. Business partners cheating one another.

7. Leaders cheating and robbing their followers.

8. Use of intimidation/threat to collect something from somebody.

9. Bullying a person to be able to get something from him/her.

Etc.

These are all criminal acts in Islam. Let us fear Allah(SWT)! There would always be repercussions to all these. Allah(SWT) has a way of getting back to us on the evils we do to others. It’s just a matter of time! The repercussion could be on ourselves, it could be on our properties and it could be on our children! The problems or calamities some people are facing are as a result of the evils they have done to others in the past. Let us fear Allah(SWT)! What you wouldn’t want people to do to you, don’t do it to others.

Remember, we’ll be accountable to Allah(SWT) for our actions on the day of judgement.
