MRS RACHEL DICKSON SET TO PAY PREGNANT WOMEN MONTHLY TO REDUCE MATERNAL MORTALITY IN THE STATE.

The wife of Bayelsa State Governor, Dr. Racheal Dickson, says as part of the measures to reduce the rate of maternal/infant mortality in the state, the government will henceforth pay pregnant women on a monthly basis.

She said the stipend would enable the pregnant women to buy whatever they need during the pregnancy period, stressing that the government would also care for them medically to reduce cases of maternal and infant mortality.

Mrs. Dickson said the recent pronouncement by the state government of providing support for pregnant women in the state was part of efforts geared towards reducing maternal and infant mortality in the state.

She spoke in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, during the commencement of a three-day programme for ‘Royal Queens’ in the Niger Delta organised by the Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Wives’ Association, a Government House statement said on Friday.

She said the government was concerned about the wellbeing of pregnant women and had put in place measures to ensure they get monthly stipend and other benefits until they safely give birth to their baby.

She expressed worry over the number of avoidable deaths, saying most of them would not have occurred if adequate care was given to the women.

According to her, every pregnant woman in the state is very important to the government as the nine months’ period of their pregnancy is very sensitive and requires the needed attention.
Mrs. Dickson said, “We will be paying our women who are pregnant monthly to ensure they are able to buy whatever they need. We will also care for them medically to ensure that cases of maternal and infant mortality are reduced.

“Most of the deaths you hear of involving pregnant women could have been avoided if they were well cared for. We are concerned about such avoidable deaths and by God’s grace, we will reduce and even stop it.”

While calling on pregnant women to take advantage of the offer by visiting government-owned hospitals, she also advised them against foods that are not good for them during their pregnancy.
Mrs Dickson equally urged the visiting Queens to use their positions to support women, especially girl-child education, saying the government in Bayelsa is strongly championing.

This is a not too good idea. I think u should provide good jobs for their husbands and well equpped hospitals for them or else Bayelsa state will soon become ' land of baby mamas and unwanted pregnancies'.

Where is she going to get the money to pay them?

Can anyone just come to the accounts office with an ultrasound scan or pregnancy test and register for monthly allowance? Or are there other eligibility criteria?

Not necessary. I'll suggest, they make antenatal and delivery costs to be affordable.

This news brings certain degree of mixed feelings. One, it's a kind gesture to help the vulnerable people like pregnant women in times of need. However, this does not help the society at large. The reason is that encouraging population growth in a country like Nigeria is counter productive. Again, handing out free money during pregnancy would lead to people having kids they might not be ready for in the long run

I don't think d
She has been well advised on this program

Instead, use the money to build a good healthcare
That is free accessible by all the pregnant women before you have people who will be having fake and unwanted pregnancies all over the place in the name of stipends. .

Misplaced priorities. Instead of providing jobs for the parents and providing free healthcare u, received encouraging population explosion. U, ve not been able to pay workers salaries in the state now u want to pay stipend to pregnant women.

I disagree with this.

This is how the broken family situation started in the US.
Our women need to maintain discernment in when they have children and who they have it with.
Learn from other nations and avoid a baby-mama land.

Sis, this ain't for naija.
It's for other countries that have already let their family morals die off long ago.
Baby mamas go too full ground with this bill oo.

Bayelsa babes sabi like to dey Bleep before. grin

No...what they need is better industry creation opportunities. THEN if they DID want to do this somewhere down the line, there needs to be checks and balances with the bill. e.g Giving LESS money if the woman cannot identify the father, etc.

We cannot let naija become like this obodo oyinbo in that regard.

It's already land of babymamas. Lots of teenage pregnancy in that state.
