Very soon this will happen: A doctor prescribes then the consultant pharmacist says prescription is wrong or not good enough. She becomes teacher and reviewer of doctor's diagnosis determined prescription....you can guess the outcome. You point to international best practice. When it comes to Nigeria it's another ball game. Our corruption and near insanity exploits the IBP for selfish reasons. Satan wants to finish our health system! 4 Likes |

PharmAlfred: My question to you is this: how does the West African Pharmacy College issue its consultancy and specialist qualifications? I ask because a pharmacy colleague here in the NGO sector did a distant programme from the college, did an exam and was awarded fellowship shortly after. No training, no sessions, she never left her job here which is not even related to pharmacy. How does such a person now sit down with , say an ENT Surgeon and say I am a fellow specialist. I am not here to argue, I just want to learn. Thank you. 2 Likes |

omojeesu:Being a typical Nigerian is fighting to ensure other professionals don't get the remuneration they deserve even though it will in no way affect yours. A stark contrast to saner climes where doctors protest against underpayment of other health professionals. Now that's being a typical, selfish, evil and backward Nigerian 7 Likes |

MrBigiman: Young man man, you shld have done your research before coming on a public platform like this to show your ignorance. Consultancy is not for medical doctors alone. People are not fools when they hear someone with the title consultant they ll quickly conclude that he or she is a doctor. So you know that there are other professionals in the health sector that hold a PhD? Also, why are people not going to meet a consultant Engineer to ask for medical help. People are knowledgeable to know that the title consultant simply means speaciality in ones field. In the UK I have seen a nurse consultant working with other GPs(check the programme doctors behind closed doors on youtube). I think we should try to read wide by simply using our available devices like smart phones etc. The title consultant will not cause any problem. What I have come to realised is that Nigerian medical doctors don't want others to progress in their field, and if they have the power they ll abolished pple with PhD from using the title Dr. 11 Likes 2 Shares |

All I see in you is jealous and brain washed being. Even with a doctor consultant people still die like fowl in our hospital. Please this is an international practice and you should learn to allow others grow. Pharmacist know their boundary already and you do not have to educate them on it. When I visited the US, I had opportunity to meet a consultant Dietitian and my diet never remained less better. I am sure Nigeria doctors will not allow such a profession grow here, no wonder we have high rate of preventable malnutrition in this country. I am business consultant hope you will not fight me too? I have a friend as a sales consult. are going to fight him. Please practice your medicine and leave pharmacy alone. MrBigiman: 15 Likes |

MrBigiman: myopic write up. Guess you have no idea what consultancy is all about. With consultancy, a pharmacist becomes specialized with restriction to a certain field in clinical pharmacy just as we have consultant ophthalmologist in medicine and the rest of them. Before now, pharmacist were regarded as jack of all trade and a master non with "NO" direct focus and this has made them to bcom complacent in their current position without putting the necessary effort towards advancing their career and becoming better in a specific area in clinical pharmacy. So therefore for you to be a consultant, you'll need to have years of hard studies, write series of exams before you Will be deemed a consultant. We already have pharmacist consultants in Nigeria but NMA has been fighting so hard for years to prevent them from being recognized. If the story above is true. it means that pharmacy is about to become a specialized profession in Nigeria just like medicine. I just hope they extend it to other profession where necessary. 4 Likes |

omojeesu: 3 out 5 could be an exaggeration in some settings but it won't be far from the truth in others. In Canada, the country you guys love to cite as a well functioning one. The one most of you dream of traveling to. Doctors protested the underpayment of other health workers. 3 Likes |

kenonze: Very wrong. A country where 70% live on $1 daily and massive unemployment and families are still from 5 to 10 persons households, an entirely privatised heath care is complete fallacy. In fact FG & SGs should invest far more on subsidized healthcare service. Education & health should make up jointly minimum 30% of national budget. Since we have no welfare benefit system. All the most egalitarian developed Western countries have robust public healthcare services. Allowing allied health care professionals attain consultancy status is nothing new. Examples abound in other countries. Including nurses. We should welcome it as an opportunity to push up the standards of those professions, with consultants being the very best of the exponent. After all Pharmacists, nurses and others have their own remit within the health care system, or is there no such thing in Nigeria? The tendency to abuse position in Nigeria applies to everyone: police, soldiers, houseboy, mechanic, lecturers, politicians, etc. I am writing this bit in response to other posts on this thread, not just yours. If consultant physiotherapists or radiographers or whatever abuse their consultant position, it is only because of 9ja factor & indiscipline. Not the title. 2 Likes |

You problem is that you do not want doctor to check properly rightly? What if a doctor makes an error who will remind him or correct him? Please just as senate and house of rep is there to check the executive of power abuse, so pharmacist should be allowed to review a doctor' prescription to keep him or her in check before over dose or wrong prescription is administered. Thank you. Babybush: 2 Likes |

I sincerely hope it's only on nairaland because the brazen exhibition of ignorance by the so called nigerian doctors is nauseating. Such ego displayed even by the ones that haven't gone for NYSC. Nigerian doctors should learn to mind their business. How someone else advancing towards the pinnacle of their respective fields make them insecure is what I cannot understand. 10 Likes |

Some Nairalanders are really myopic. They fail to see the whole aspect of it. Some don't even seem to know the true definition of "Consultancy" and how it is applicable in different professions...not just to Doctors. Instead of taking time to rant or wail here, why don't you browse on it and see how it is applied. Wikipedia is still free and doesn't require subscription. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consultant Check the meaning of Consultancy in each profession to have a broader view before coming here to spew rubbish like some commenters here. Obviously, nobody here in this thread is a Consultant that is why some are feeling threatened by the very word 'Consultant Pharmacist'. If you were, you would know that there is a certain limit to everything with a Code of Ethics in place. Let me give a quick example; My very good friend is an Engineering Consultant relating to Thermal Engineering. If I wanted to build a large scale refrigeration room, I quickly seek his advice. But if i want to know exactly the best way to power such structures, I will meet an Engineering Consultant specifically on Power. Both are Engineers, but each knows his own onions. If the Engineer in Power systems should tell me something related with Thermal structures besides how the power plant should be properly cooled, then I know that the person is definitely not a professional and my business with him ends there. This is a brief example of what consultancy is and should not be an issue except if some people actually don't know jack about his or her profession and will feel intimidated. 9 Likes |

Please I want to ask an innocent question for enlightenment. I want to understand the correlation between the circular above and the postgraduate consultancy program (West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacist). The circular above says you can only be a consultant after reaching level 17 while for postgraduate consultancy program even a fresh pharmacist can apply and become a consultant, my question now is, which consultant are we to acknowledge, is it the civil service level 17 consultant or the one from postgraduate consultancy program? Thank you as I anticipate your kind responses. 1 Like |

PharmAlfred:The problem with most Nigerian medical doctors is that they are myopic in their thinking. They feel the world revolves round them alone, forgetting that other professionals in other fields are not sleeping. Why do medical doctors want to do all the work and take all the medical glory? They are not even doing their parts well, yet they will be involving themselves in other professions they know so little about.Medical doctors in Nigeria need to put their ego aside and learn more about the world around them.Live and let's live 3 Likes |

PHC1stBorn: It's a shame. But Nigerian Medicine will surely enter a state of emergency, trust me. The new push at which Doctors are running out, the remaining doctors would be "Johesu Doctors" who would treat typhoid and malara from morning till night. 1 Like |
